The ultra-modern city of Dubai, conveniently located at the crossroads between Europe and Asia, is already well-known for its gleaming skyscrapers, luxury hotels and enormous shopping malls. But as the first-time traveler will discover, Dubai offers a wealth of unique and interesting activities that go well beyond the glitz of its reputation as a Middle-Eastern Las Vegas. Below is a sampling of the often-surprising opportunities to be had at the tip of the Arabian Peninsula.

1) Take A View from the Top

Not all skyscrapers are created equal, and standing at the base of the massive Burj Khalifa is a striking reminder of that. Of course, when visiting the tallest building in the world, it only makes sense to head to the top. Rocket to the 124th floor for unmatched views of the Persian Gulf to the desert. Weather permitting you can even take a step outside on the observation deck.

2) Get an Overview of the City

Dubai is a fascinating blend of old and new. Taking a city tour allows you to see both existing side by side. Whether it's the 18th Century Al Fahidi Fort, the ultra-luxurious Burj Al Arab Hotel or the skyscraper canyon of Sheik Zayed Road, the juxtaposition of New World glamour and Old World charm is on display in this sprawling metropolis.

3) Food, Food & More Food

Strategically located at a comfortable distance from the eastern and western parts of the globe, this cosmopolitan city is a melting point of different cultures, gastronomically too! From the popular local middle eastern cuisine and Indian, to exotic Peruvian and Japanese, and a range of foodie delights that go from Michelin starred restaurant to street food, the variety is a foodie’s delight!

4) Live It Up On A Yacht

Known as a playground for the rich and famous, in Dubai you can live like a Sheikh for a day on a private yacht tour that will allow you to take in the magnificent skyline from the warm waters of the Persian Gulf.

5) Watch the Sun Rise in The Desert

Immediately beyond the city limits, the mighty desert takes over, allowing to enjoy the beauty of this unique biosphere. Perched high atop a dune, you can marvel at the shifting tones of a sunrise over the desert, and enjoy some roller coaster romping through the dunes on your way back into the city.

6) Enjoy Culture Under the Stars

If getting up early isn't your thing, an evening desert experience might be more appealing. Many tours offer the chance to sample Arabic culture via camel rides, traditional dancing, and other cultural offerings followed by a barbecue dinner under the stars. This is a unique opportunity for those looking for a night 'out of town' as opposed to a night 'out on the town'.

7) Just Play in The Sand

There are many options for fun under the (desert) sun, whether riding a quad, "dune-bashing" in a private vehicle, or sand boarding down the massive dunes. With the desert literally at Dubai's doorstep, having a chance to play in the sand is an attractive and convenient activity for adrenaline junkies.

8) 'Souk' It Up

While modern, air-conditioned malls abound, the historic charm of Dubai's authentic souks (markets) is a great taste of Arabic culture and an excellent shopping opportunity for one of kind items. You can thrill your taste buds in the Spice Market or channel your inner Midas at the Gold Souk. Either way it's a great experience for those willing to go beyond the malls.

9) Go Skiing in The Desert (For Real)

Normally the terms 'desert' and 'skiing' aren't seen together. But this being Dubai, even that unlikely combination is a reality at Ski Dubai - an indoor ski slope that allows you a snowy taste of winter. And the best part is that all you need to do to warm back up, is step outside!

10) Sip High Tea at The Burj Al Arab

If your tastes are a little more refined, don't miss high tea at Dubai's iconic Burj Al Arab Hotel. This sail shaped hotel and landmark gives luxury a whole new meaning, and for a few hours you too can live the high life.

11) Hit the Gas in a Formula One Race Car

Racing fans with some money to burn can live the dream of getting behind the wheel of a Formula One race car. Feel the rush of adrenaline taking the corners at high speed around a closed track just like you imagined doing as a kid. It's just another one of the surprises that are common place in Dubai.

12) Go Fish

With miles of coastline and the Persian Gulf lapping at its shores, Dubai is an excellent base for anglers. The big draw is deep sea fishing, often aboard a chartered boat that will take you to the best spots for reeling in a memorable catch. With early morning and afternoon departures, it isn't hard to fit this water-based activity into your itinerary.

13) Play with Birds Of Prey

Try your hand at the traditional sport of falconry with a tour that will give you some history and the chance to interact with these magnificent birds. Combining a trip to the desert and even a falcon market, this is a unique opportunity for bird and nature lovers alike.

14) Get In Touch With Your Spiritual Side

The Arabian Peninsula is known for its deeply religious heritage, and a city tour will allow you the chance to visit the impressive Jumeirah Mosque. You can ponder the divine and admire the architecture while gaining insight into the culture and beliefs of those who call Dubai home.
