The Church of the Holy Emperor Uroš and Grand Mosque of Mulla Vesel Guta are an epitome of the centuries-long coexistence between religious communities in the country.
The old mosque was built in 1884 with permission obtained from Sultan Abdul Hamid II. The Grand Mosque of the city was bombed by German forces in 1941. The new appearance of the mosque that still exists today dates back to 1942. Its first minaret was built in 1957, while the second minaret in 2006.
The Church of the Holy Emperor Uroš was built between 1929 and 1933, dedicated to Serbian emperor Uroš V (r. 1355–71). It was built as a five-domed building with a trefoil base and made of concrete, stone and brick mix which was later plastered. The church of the Gračanica Monastery served as a model for the diverse composition of the upper part of the temple. The iconostasis dates from the 19th century, made in wood, and it was a gift of the Serbian King Aleksandar I Karadjordjević.
