The government and the communities in Cape Coast, and El Mina should understand that the Castles and forts that abound in these communities are invaluable and we should protect them and encourage tourists from all over the world to continue to learn about our history and part of our past.
The El Mina Castle, is the oldest building in the south of the Sahara. It is very important to West Africa and the continent of Africa. These Castles should be protected.
There is no doubt that the government is conscious of its importance and the people also value them. It is essential to understand that Ghana is another growing destination for tourism and one should be careful of what can tarnish the image, hard work and history, that our ancestors lived and died for.
My thought is that, we should find a way to discourage the touts in El Mina and Cape Coast from hazzling the tourists. Tour Guides should be trained from time to time and husslers who are interested in the proffession should also be educated. The impression we create in the mind of foreigners/tourists may linger forever. Tour Guides are ambassadors.
The second thought on my mind is that, every building that houses the Posuban should be painted regularly with conscious support from the different NGO'S and government. Posubans should be kept clean, and tour guides in the area should add them to their tour itineries. The functions of the Posubans, yesterday, today and tommorrow should be highlighted.
It is not unusual to see husslers hazzling tourists around the world, but it should not be encouraged. It should be controlled.
