Hi everyone!
Warm greetings from Asia Valleys Tours & Travels – Bhutan!
If you’re planning a trip to Bhutan, we’re excited to welcome you in advance. As a local travel company passionate about sharing the heart and soul of our country, we’d love to give you a little taste (literally!) of what makes Bhutanese cuisine so unique and memorable.
Let’s be honest—Bhutanese food isn’t mild, but if you’re curious and adventurous, you’re in for a flavorful journey. ?️
Ema Datshi – The National Dish
The most iconic dish of Bhutan is Ema Datshi, a spicy stew made with chilies and cheese. In Bhutan, chilies aren’t a spice—they’re the main vegetable!
The cheese is soft, homemade, and slightly tangy. Served with warm red rice, this dish is comforting and fiery at the same time. It’s the perfect introduction to Bhutanese flavors—and yes, most of our guests remember their first bite very clearly!
Suja – Traditional Butter Tea
Our butter tea, or Suja, surprises many visitors. Made with fermented tea leaves, salt, and butter (traditionally from yak milk), it tastes more like a warm broth than regular tea.
Suja is especially enjoyable in the cold mountain air and is usually paired with snacks like puffed rice (zow) or crunchy fried dough (khapsey). Some guests sip it politely, others get hooked!
Momos – Everyone’s Favorite
Who doesn’t love momos? These dumplings are filled with vegetables, cheese, or meat, and either steamed or fried. Served with spicy ezay (our chili dip), momos are a traveler’s favorite.
If you’re lucky, your trip might include a visit to a local home—where you can enjoy fresh, homemade momos. A true Bhutanese comfort food experience!
More Must-Try Dishes:
Phaksha Paa – Pork cooked with radish and dried chilies
Hoentay – Buckwheat dumplings from Haa filled with cheese and greens
Ezay – Bhutan’s famous chili dip (every household has its secret recipe!)
Jasha Maru – Light, spicy chicken stew with a burst of flavor
What Our Guests Say
Many travelers are surprised by the boldness of Bhutanese food—but they quickly grow to love it. One thing we hear often:
“It’s spicier than I expected—but so delicious I couldn’t stop!”
That’s what Bhutanese cuisine is all about—warmth, simplicity, boldness, and heart.
At Asia Valleys Tours & Travels, we make sure your Bhutan experience includes authentic food moments—whether it’s sharing a bowl of Ema Datshi in a mountain farmhouse, sipping Suja in the chill morning air, or enjoying momos after a long hike.
Let us know if you’d like food-specific recommendations or want to include culinary experiences in your itinerary. We’d love to serve you not just a tour, but a true taste of Bhutan.
