Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is a 7000ha ranch about 170km three hours drive from Kampala. It presently contains 12 Rhinos the proud home of the only wild rhinos in Uganda and some of the smaller game species. It is located in Nakasongola district between Kampala and Masindi along Bombo road covering over 170square kilometer of land. It is 180kilometres from Kampala to the rhino sanctuary. There are 17 white rhinos in Uganda, 2 in Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (Entebbe) just a few metres to Uganda’s international airport and the remaining 17 are habited in the sanctuary. They have interesting names like Nandi, Obama, Malaika, Baby uhuru, kori, Bella, Baby Waribu, Donna Taleo and Baby Luna all exciting to see.

Rhinos have a very bad sight but an extreme good sense of smell and at times charge against a distressing scent or smell when they fell threatened about it. Although they are big in size, can run at a speed of 30 to 40 miles per hour and can live four to five days in the absence of water. The female rhino is called a cow, a male is called a bull as the young one is a calf. When any calf is threatened by a predator and the adult rhino usually makes a circle to give it protection. Rhinos can sleep both standing as well as lying down. Rhinos are herbivores thus feed on grass, tender plants and other type of vegetation. A group of rhinos is called a crush and their gestation period takes 6months to give birth to their young ones.

Ziwa has other attractions besides rhinos like crocodiles, cobras, black mamba, stantunga, antelopes and over 350 bird species that are interesting to see. Come to Ziwa rhino sanctuary for a memorable experience.
