Article on the Everest Base Camp Trek:
The flight to Lukla is a 45 minute ride through the mountains on a small twin-otter plane to the Tenzing-Hillary Airport, situated at 2,850 meters above sea level. From here, you will begin the trek into the Solou Khumbu Region, following the Dudh Kosi River along the beautiful, lush trail towards Namche Bazaar. Namche Bazaar is the Sherpa capital of Nepal, located at 3,440 meters and is a beloved stop by many of Nepal’s trekkers. This picturesque village is built into the side of a hill, and is the main trading center for the Khumbu Region , making it a perfect stop for acclimatization on your way to Everest Base Camp. It takes our bodies time to adjust to the lack of oxygen that we will encounter at these heights, therefore we have to take our time as we go higher up the trail, giving our bodies that essential time it needs to acclimatize. Your time spent in Namche Bazaar will be filled with things to do as the small town offers many welcomed amenities such as a bakery, bars, restaurants, internet access and many stalls selling local crafts, jewelry, climbing gear, medicines and more. There is also a market held in the village where you can purchase goods from Tibetan Traders in the Square.
From Namche Bazaar you will continue up the trail, through valleys with massive Himalayan peaks all around, passing by villages where you will meet the welcoming local Sherpa people. Among those villages is the village of Tengboche, located at 3,867 meters, which holds the important Buddhist monastery, the Tengboche Monastery. The Monastery was originally built in 1916 and was destroyed twice, once by an earthquake and once by a fire, and the current structure was rebuilt in 1989 and has since been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This beautiful Monastery and the towns are draped with a panoramic view of the Himalayan Mountains, including the well-known peaks of Tawache, Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Nuptse, and Thamserku.
From Tengboche, you begin to see the effects of the lack of oxygen on the environment. The green lush valleys turn into a black and white world with dusty trails and stunning snowy peaks surrounding you. You pass through Dingboche, sitting at 4,410 m, which is where we take another chance to spend extra time acclimatizing to the lower levels of oxygen. From here. the journey takes you up to the steep Dugla Pass to Lobuche. This section of the trek can be strenuous, but your efforts are rewarded with spectacular views over the Himalayas. From the top of the Dugla Pass begins the Khumbu Glacier, which continues all the way to Everest Base Camp and on up high on Mount Everest. We will continue to Lobuche 4,920 m and on to Gorak Shep at 5,180 m, which is the final acclimatization stop on our way to Everest Base Camp. From Gorakshep, you will only have a short walk into Base Camp and get the chance to stand at the base of the infamous Khumbu Icefall, which claims many lives every year when people are attempting to summit the world’s highest peak. We will also have a chance to summit Kala Patthar at 5,632 m to get the classic view of Mount Everest in all her glory!
Our spectacular trek to base camp takes nine days on the way up and three days back down to Lukla with 3 nights spent in Namche Bazaar on the way up and 1 night on the way back down to have a celebration drink in one of the pubs. You can trek from February to May and September to December. We prefer March and November. The walk through the Himalayas is a stunning journey from start to finish and allows you to not only be able to see the incredible scenery of the highest mountains in the world, but you are also given the opportunity to meet the local Sherpa people and see the way they live.
