The museum was founded in 1978. It is housed in one of the buildings of old Yerevan, in the reconstruction and design of which a group of talented folk craftsmen participated. The collection of the museum contains thousands of exquisite items made from silver and copper, stone and ceramics, bone and glass, as well as paintings and sculptures, woodcarving, embroidery, silverware, rugs, carpets, and jewelry.
The collection is constantly being enriched with works of present-day craftsman and articles of Armenia ancient art. In the course of the years of its existence the museum has got many donations from Armenians living abroad. The samples of the museum are valuable specimens of national culture, conveying our people’s experience gained through centuries, helping us to conceive with different stages of the development of Armenian national art and the revival of its traditions.
