Whether we live in commercialized societies or communities relatively unchanged by time, and whether we believe in them or not, we must admit that we are surrounded by signs, images and ideas that are often highly symbolic and have been passed from generation to generation by means of traditions, customs, beliefs and superstitions. Most of the traditions may seem like nonsense to people with contemporary values. However we can not ignore the large number of people who still believe in them today and the even larger number who still highly respect them, possibly because they are related to their former religion. Turkish Culture is one of the richest in the world in terms of the number and variety of traditions, customs, beliefs etc. This book sets out to introduce briefly to the non-Turkish reader some of the more interesting Turkish beliefs that evolved into traditions.
