Eeast Kalimantan is not only famous for Labuan Cermin or Biduk- Biduk, which are the most popular destinations among tourists. The region is also known for offering sightings of the magnificent whale shark, one of the largest fish species in the world, precisely in the waters of Talaisayan. These majestic creatures are known by many names, such as Totol Shark, Star Shark, Shark Bingkoh, or the more common, Kikaki.

Growth

Whale sharks are known to reach up to 18-22 meters in size, with biological characteristics of growth and the process of slow sexual maturity, and long life. These sharks are not considered the largest fish species in the world without reason. They can weigh up to 20 tons.

Diet

The whale shark itself equals the Balin whale (Baleen whale) in terms of its feeding habit, which involves filtering (filter feeding). However, unlike the Balin whale that holds sea water in it oral cavity, whale sharks actually suck seawater containing food, ranging from plankton, algae, or small squid to small fish (sardines and anchovies). The process of filtering the food is not just done by swimming forward, but can also be up and down movement in the vertical position, with the shark's head on top and the tail below while actively sucking water into its mouth and netted food.

Whale sharks are known to be gentle giants; however, it is important to respect their space, and not bother these amazing creatures while observing or swimming with them.
