7 Days Machame Route – Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing Adventure

The Machame Route is one of the most popular and scenic routes for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain at 5,895 meters above sea level. Often called the “Whiskey Route,” Machame is ideal for adventurous trekkers who want a beautiful trail, excellent acclimatization opportunities, and a rewarding summit experience.

The 7-day Machame Route provides enough time to adjust gradually to the increasing altitude. The route passes through several distinct ecological zones, from lush tropical rainforest to open moorland, alpine desert, and finally the high-altitude Arctic zone near Uhuru Peak.

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a transfer from your hotel to Machame Gate. After completing park registration and meeting your mountain crew, you begin trekking through the dense rainforest. The trail is surrounded by tropical vegetation, birds, and occasionally monkeys.

After several hours of hiking, you reach Machame Camp, where your crew prepares dinner and your tent for the night.

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

After breakfast, you leave the rainforest behind and continue toward the moorland zone. The landscape becomes more open, with giant heathers, volcanic rocks, and spectacular views of Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro.

The trek gradually becomes steeper as you approach Shira Plateau. You spend the night at Shira Camp and have an opportunity to rest and enjoy the mountain scenery.

Day 3: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp

This is an important acclimatization day. The trail takes you toward Lava Tower, reaching approximately 4,630 meters before descending to Barranco Camp.

This “climb high, sleep low” approach helps your body adapt to the altitude. Along the way, you experience dramatic volcanic landscapes and impressive views of the Southern Icefields.

You descend into the beautiful Barranco Valley, surrounded by towering cliffs and unique vegetation.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

The day begins with the famous Barranco Wall. Although it looks challenging from below, it is a non-technical climb and can be completed safely with the support of your experienced mountain guides.

After reaching the top of the wall, you continue through a series of valleys and ridges toward Karanga Camp. The shorter hiking distance gives you time to rest and prepare for the summit stages.

Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Today you enter the alpine desert zone as vegetation becomes increasingly sparse. The trail continues toward Barafu Camp, the final base camp before your summit attempt.

After arriving at Barafu Camp, you have an early dinner and rest. Your guides provide a summit briefing and help you prepare your equipment because the summit trek begins around midnight.

Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak, then Mweka Camp

Summit day is the most challenging and rewarding part of the Machame Route. You begin your climb during the night, walking slowly through the darkness toward Stella Point on the crater rim.

After reaching Stella Point, you continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters.

Standing at Uhuru Peak is an unforgettable achievement. After taking photographs and celebrating your accomplishment, you begin the descent to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down toward Mweka Camp.

Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Your final day begins with breakfast before descending through the beautiful rainforest to Mweka Gate.

After completing the park exit procedures, you say goodbye to your mountain crew and receive your summit certificates. Your driver then transfers you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
