Day 1: Arrival in Semera –

Drive to Erta Ale (Approx. 200–250 km drive, 6–8 hours off-road)You will fly from Addis Ababa on Ethiopian Airlines flight ET110, departing at 06:45 AMand arriving in Semera around 08:10 AM. Our regional manager will meet you at the airport for a warm welcome and transfer to Semera town (a short drive). Enjoy a relaxing breakfast and traditional Ethiopian coffee to start your day. We then proceed on a long but scenic 4×4 drive toward Erta Ale volcano, passing through dramatic desert landscapes. En route, we stop at the beautiful Lake Afdera—a hypersaline lake where the high salt concentration allows effortless floating (similar to the Dead Sea). If you're interested in swimming, this is a refreshing and unique opportunity in the warm, emerald-green waters. Lunch will be served picnic-style in the middle of the desert, often near local Afar nomadic settlements (the Afar people are semi-nomadic herders who move seasonally for grazing and resources). After lunch, continue driving to the Erta Ale base camp (Dodom area). Upon arrival, settle in, rest, and relax in the shade. Around 18:00–18:30, begin a short 20-minute hike (gentle but hot) to the volcano's rim—one of the world's most famous and active sites. If conditions allow (lava lake activity is ongoing but unpredictable), you'll witness the mesmerizing glow of the lava lake up close. Overnight: Open-air camping on the rim (basic but supported with mattresses, blankets, and crew; enjoy the stars and volcanic drama).

Day 2: Erta Ale Sunrise –
Drive to Hamed Ela (Approx. 100–150 km drive, 4–6 hours)Wake up early around 05:00 AMfor a 20-minute hike to explore the other side of the volcano and catch a breathtaking sunrise over the caldera and lava features (a magical moment with cooler temperatures and golden light). Return to camp where breakfast will be ready and waiting. After breakfast, descend and drive toward Hamed Ela, a traditional Afar village and base for Dallol explorations. Upon arrival, check into the camping site for some rest and downtime. In the late afternoon/evening, head to the stunning Lake Assale (Karum)—a vast salt flat and lake offering one of the most unique sunsets you'll ever see. The reflections on the white salt, combined with the colorful sky and surrounding salty mountains, create an otherworldly, surreal atmosphere completely different from typical sunsets. Return to camp for dinner and overnight in Hamed Ela.

Day 3: Dallol Exploration –
Return to Mekelle/Addis AbabaWake up early around 06:00 AMto drive to the salt lake for a beautiful sunrise over the expansive white flats—spend peaceful moments enjoying the scenic views and golden light. Breakfast will be served at the salt lake, allowing you to savor the tranquility. After breakfast, proceed to Dallol—famous for its extraordinary colorful landscapes (vibrant sulfur springs, acid ponds, multicolored salt formations, and geothermal features that look almost alien). Walk around the area to fully appreciate this one-of-a-kind geothermal wonder. From there, drive back toward Mekelle via Aba Ala (or similar route), stopping for lunch at a local restaurant in Aba Ala. Continue to Mekelle, arriving in time for your transfer to the airport. Fly back to Addis Ababa on Ethiopian Airlines flight ET117, departing at 17:50and arriving around 19:00. Upon arrival in Addis Ababa, we will meet you at the airport for transfer to your hotel or directly to the international terminal if you have a connecting flight.
