  • The Best of Ho Chi Minh City: Real Life & Real Time expand_more
    • This amazing online journey will start from the history landmark, the 1966 Reunification Palace or the Independent Palace which used to be considered the White House of the old Saigon. I will share about history of this 300 year old city, and the life of Saigonese after April 30th, 1975. You will learn more about the life of the boat people through the story told by an insider, me.
    • Next, we will be slowly walking through the old French headquarter in the city to get to the 1880 Notre Dame Basilica, the City's Cathedral and then crossing the street to take a closer look inside the 1891 Saigon Central Post Office which was designed by Alfred Foulhoux, but is often erroneously credited as being the work of Gustave Eiffel.
    • From the front yard of Saigon Central Post Office, you can see the rooftop of the American CIA building on 22 Gia Long street where an iconic "Fall of Saigon" photo happened, if you still remember. This famous photo taken by Dutch photographer Hubert Van Es, who had been on assignment in Vietnam since 1969 for The Associated Press and United Press International, snapped the photo with a 300 mm lens from four blocks away.
    • Scrolling down the Rue Catinat, nowadays called Dong Khoi street, you will feel the metropolitan atmosphere with buildings blended with multi-international luxury branded shops before reaching the historic 1880 Continental Hotel in harmony with 1898 Municipal Theatre/Opera House and the 1898 Hôtel de ville.
    • Lastly, you will see the very first and famous coffee shop location at the end of XIX, Grand Cafe de la Terrasse. Now it is the famous Caravelle hotel which was constructed since 1957 and grand-opened on Chrismast Eve 1959. And the 1986 REX hotel with the best rooftop bar on 5th floor which was once upon a time said: "One of a thousand things to see before you die". It used to be the American Cultural Center in 1960, at which time the Abraham Lincoln Library was established on the ground floor. During the Vietnam war the American Information Service made its base at the hotel which soon became the favorite haunt of U.S. officers and the scene of daily press briefings to foreign correspondents, or “five o’clock follies”, as they were called.
