It is the second largest mosque in Africa after the Algiers grand mosque, and the 7th largest in the world. Its minaret is the world's second tallest minaret at 210 metres (689 ft).

Chefchaaouen is one of the most visited towns in Morocco, very well known for its blue building. The town was established in 1471 when Moorish and Jewish people fled here to escape the Reconquista of Spain.
