7 Days Desert tour itinerary for turkmenistan: Admmire Modern, Historical & Natural Wonders

Spend an unforgettable week exploring historical sites, archaeological ruins, national monuments and natural wonders of the country. Head inside the caves where dinosaurs lived and enjoy a night at the edge of the gas crater of Darvaza.

DAY 01


  • Meet the group at International Airport of Ashgabat. 

  • Transfer to the hotel accommodation and have breakfast. 

  • Set off on a city tour with your Turkmen tour guide, visiting places of interest: 

    • National Museum of Turkmenistan

    • State historical reserve “Nissa” (UNESCO World Heritage Site)

    • International Equestrian Complex 

  • Have lunch and then continue the tour:

    • Park of Independence 

    • Arch of Neutrality 

    • Monument of Ashgabat 

    • Indoor Ferris Wheel “Alem” 

    • “Gulistan bazaar”, also known as “Russian bazaar”

  • Drive back to the hotel for overnight.

DAY 02

Ashgabat - Turkmenabad

  • Transfer to the airport after breakfast to catch the flight to Turkmenabad. 

  • Meet your Turkmenabad tour guide at the airoport. 

  • Visit the ancient fortress “Amul”. 

  • Drive to Koytendag (6-7 hours). On the way, visit the mausoleum of Astana Baba. 

  • Have lunch in Kerki. 

  • Arrive at the touristic base of “Koytendag” in Koyten village. 

  • Transfer to guest accommodation and enjoy some time on your own. 

Dinner & Overnight at the touristic base.

DAY 03


  • Have breakfast and then visit the local natural places of interest: 

    • Gorge and cave Kyrk Gyz

    • Plato of Dinosaurs (biggest place of dinosaurs footprints) 

    • Umbar Dere Waterfall 

  • Have lunch and spend some time on your own. 

Dinner & overnight at the touristic base.

DAY 04

Turkmenabat - Mary

  • After breakfast, drive back to Turkmenabad. 

  • Have lunch and proceed to Mary (280km, 3-3,5 hours). 

  • Arrive at the hotel accommodation for overnight.

DAY 05

Mary - Ashgabat

  • Visit Museum of Ethnography of Mary Region. 

  • Drive to Bayramali (30 km). 

  • Tour around State Historical Reserve “Ancient Merv” – “Queen of the World” which was one of the important capitals of Islam, alongside with Bagdad, Cairo and Damask. 

  • Drive back to Mary. 

  • Transfer to Ashgabat (350 km). On the way make shortstops in Abiverd – ruins of the Seyidjemalettin mosque. 

  • Move to hotel accommodation for overnight.

DAY 06

Ashgabat - Dashoguz - Kunyaurgench - Darvaza

  • After breakfast, transfer to the airport catch the flight to Dashoguz. 

  • Upon arrival, drive to Kunyaurgench (105 km). 

  • Visit the State historical reserve “Ancient Kunyaurgench” - huge complex with ruins and monuments of modern Kunyaurgench. Famous scientists, like Ali Biruni, Avicenna had worked here. The city fought back against the army of Genghis Khan but from that period only a couple of architectural monuments and buildings exist. Still, several major parts of monuments have been explored and studied. This place is still holy for the Muslims. 

  • Drive to Darvaza. Gas Crater at Darvaza is located in the middle of Karakum desert and it’s a huge burning hole with the long flames. Light of the flames can be seen many kilometres away. Explore the place. 

  • Dinner (barbeque) & overnight at a tented camp.

DAY 07


  • Drive to Ashgabat (250 km). 

  • Transfer to International Airport of Ashgabat,

End of the tour.

  • Merv was the most prosperous during XI-XII centuries when it was capital of the Great Seljuk Empire.Their Empire stretched from Amu Darya river until the Mediterranean [sensitive content]ljuk’s Merv occupied more 640 hectares and was one of the prosperous cities of that period.It attracted scientists and traders from all world of Islam.However, Merv couldn’t resist assaults of Mongols in 1221 and was totally demolished with all marvellous monuments and invaluable libraries.Ruins of Ancient Merv spread more than 70 sq m, far beyond the first city district.
