9 Days Jeep Safari tour itinerary for tajikistan: Cross The Border For Unique Culture And Traditions

Embark on a journey, where you will be conversant with the historical and archaeological sites of Tajikistan. The beautiful scenery of the river Panj which separates the boundary line between Tajikistan and Afghanistan, and the natural shrines, as well as the scenery of the high mountains of the Pamirs, will take your breath away.

DAY 01

Arrival in Dushanbe

  • Welcome to Dushanbe! Meet and get a warm welcome at the airport. If time permits and guests arrive early, we can begin our tour the same day.

  • Visit one of the biggest National Flags in the world that is 165 meters tall, Gurminj Museum of Traditional Musical Instruments, Museum of Antiquities and the Asian Bazaar (Market).

  • Eat dinner in one of the best traditional restaurants where you will try Tajik food.

DAY 02

Dushanbe - Kalai Khumb

  • Depart Dushanbe and travel to Kalai Khumb through spectacular mountain scenery.

  • Cross the Norak Water Reservoir that is called the Tajik Sea and visit the ancient fortress Hulbuk dated from the VIII century.  The highest point of the day is Shuraba Pass (2267m), from where the Afghanistan border starts.

  • Continue driving along the natural border of the River Panj. This part is very beautiful because of its unique mountains and is already the territory of the Pamir Mountains.

DAY 03

Kalai Khumb- Khorоg

  • Set off to Khorog town which is the capital city of Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Province (GBAO). It is located on high narrow terraces, at the height of 2200 – 2300 meters above sea level in the Pamir Mountains, at the confluence of the Gunt and Panj Rivers. The road will follow near Panj River, it is built by the Soviets in the 1930s, and is in a state of disrepair in many places.

  • See the civilization of the two countries and their differences. When we pass over Kalaikhum to Khorog, the scenery and the people change. The people here are Pamiris and have unique traditions and languages.

DAY 04

Khorog city tour

  • Time to tour Khorog city’s sights today. Due to the high altitude, it is best to stop for a few nights to help acclimatize with the climate.

  • Visit the Ethnographical Museum and the Botanical Garden with some great panoramic views. It is the highest garden in the world with unique plants and trees brought from different parts of the world.

DAY 05

Khorog - Ishkashim

  • Go on a trip to the Mineral Hot Spring, called “Garm Chashma”. It is about 42 km from Khorog on the way to Ishkashim. Garm Chashma was built in the late 1950s on the site of a mineral spring.  The healing waters of this place are known throughout the region and are visited by a large number of travellers and tourists yearly.

  • Visit Ruby Mines of Khuhi Lal, where Badakhshan’s rubies were mined as early as the 14th century. Ishkashim is a small town at the mouth of the Wakhan corridor, where the 19th century Great Game ended.

  • Travel north, and we will encounter breathtaking views of the Pamirs to the left and the Hindu Kush to the right.

  • Got lucky and arrived at Ishkashim on Saturday? Then, we will be able to visit the Cross border Tajik-Afghan market on the Afghan side. There is no need to obtain an Afghan visa for this visit.

DAY 06

Ishkashim - Yamg - Langar

  • Travel farther, and on our way, we will visit the Kah-Kaha in Namadgut. It is one of the oldest fortresses on the Silk Road, thought to have been constructed around the 4th century A.D., and is said to be named after the epic kind of dark-skinned fire-worshippers.

  • Visit the Museum of Sufi Muborak-Kadami Vakhani where visitors can explore the life of a local Sufi scholar, theologian, traveler, and poet who lived in this region until 1910. Some of his most marvellous achievements can be seen here. There is a stone pillar with a hole carved in it near his house, which he used to calculate the solar calendar. His house is decorated with inscriptions and decorations made by the scholar.

  • Return and on the way back, we will visit Buddhist Stupa in Vrang, sacred hot springs of Bibi Fatima Zahra and ruins of Yamchun fortress (IV-III B.C.) that once guarded Pamir branch of the Great Silk Road.

DAY 07

Langar – Bulun Kul - Yashil Kul Lakes

  • Have breakfast at the house that we stay overnight and will leave the spectacular views of Afghanistan with the ice-capped summit of the Wakhan Range, the Pamir River, and will cross Khargushi pass.

  • Arrive in Bulun Kul and Yashil Kul Lakes, where we will stay in a small hamlet of Bulunkul. The people who live here are Pamiris, Tajiks, and Kyrgyz nomads living in a harsh but hospitable environment.

  • Learn very deeply about how people have adapted to life in such a remote mountainous area.

  • Walk around the ruins of a caravanserai and solar calendar on the north side of Lake Yashil Kul.

DAY 08

Bulun Kul - Murgab – Kara Kul

  • Continue the journey, and if the weather is clear enough, we will head up to the Shorbulak Observatory, from where we can see the Muztag Ata and Kongur Peaks, which are part of the Khun Lun Range (located in China). Murgab is a quiet town with only bazaar (market) of the High Pamir region where Kyrgyz and Tajik people live.

  • Pay a visit to a handicraft shop in “Yak House”. The marvellous views of the mountains and glaciers along the way will be simply breathtaking, as the road takes us to the Ak Baital Pass (The White Horse Pass 4655m). This is the highest pass in the former USSR and was called “The Roof of the World”.

  • Encounter the hidden site in this expanse of an arid landscape which is the stunning Karakul Lake, created millions of years ago by a meteorite and noted as one of the most geologically fascinating places on earth.

  • Have an opportunity to take a short walk along the lake. The surrounding area offers some spectacular views, which are especially dramatic with the sun setting over the nearby snow-capped mountains.

DAY 09

Kara Kul - Osh

  • Continue your trip to Osh this morning. Osh is the second-largest city in Kyrgyzstan. It is the oldest city in the country.

  • Travel on our final Pamir Highway high pass which is the Kyzyl Art Pass (4282 meters), which essentially forms the border between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.

  • Pass Sary Tash village and depart the high mountains of the Pamir-Alay range, leaving behind the crossroads of Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and China.

  • Cross the Taldyk Pass (3554m) and enjoy some beautiful views.

  • Travel about 185 km from Sary Tash, and depending on the road conditions and travel times, we expect to arrive in Osh, Kyrgyzstan early evening.
