Description

Prambanan Temple is the largest Hindu temple in Indonesia. Located in the southern part of Central Java province, this temple is a landmark of a glorious Hindu kingdom between the 8th and 10th century. The temple stands as a mark of a Hindu dynasty's ruling over a Buddhist dynasty that once occupied the region.

In this online experience, you will walk through the great compound consisting of 240 small and big temples. Learn about the sophisticated technology used to build this ingenious place of worship. Take a closer look at the engravings on the volcanic stones and understand what they depict. The temple also served as the great royal worship place as well as learning means for the people at that time. The lessons are carefully depicted through engraved stones all around the temple.

At the heart of the compound are three temples dedicated to Trimurti (triumvirate - the greatest God in Hinduism). Standing tall in the middle is the temple dedicated to Shiva - the destroyer followed by the temple dedicated to Brahma - the creator in the south and the temple dedicated to temple Vishnu, the god of love and preservation in the north.

Meet your Host
Gagat Handoyo

My interests in tourism started when I was in high school. Unfortunately, I had to set my dream aside when I took law as my major in the university. I could not bury this dream for too long. When the opportunity came it had come through my blood and become the greatest passion of my life. I strongly believe in the philosophy of living your dreams one journey at a time.

I will be happy to play host when you visit Yogyakarta and would love to share my knowledge about our culture and heritage while entertaining my spirit of learning through discussions.
