Megalithic Ruins Of Sacsayhuaman

Sacsayhuaman, a Temple to the Sun God (Inti). It is one of the most fabulous sites built by the Inca civilization in the heart of the Andes mountains of Peru. Right in the outskirts of Cusco City (Capital of the Inca Civilization), and at the top of a difficult mountain, this religious complex is full of superlatives. It features the largest and heaviest stone blocks moved by the Incas, from a nearby stone quarry to the current location of the site. Thousands of builders worked for a little under a century, to achieve one of the most celebrated masterpieces of the Inca Civilization, a temple like no other, for extravagant ceremonies to please the Sun God.

Description

Saqsaywaman, a Temple to the Sun God (Inti), is one of the most fabulous sites built by the Inca civilisation in the heart of the Andes mountains of Peru. Located right on the outskirts of Cusco City; which was the capital of the Inca civilisation; and at the top of a difficult mountain, this religious complex is full of superlatives. It features the largest and heaviest stone blocks moved by the Incas, from a nearby stone quarry to the current location of the site. Thousands of builders worked here for a little under a century to achieve one of the most celebrated masterpieces of the Inca civilisation: a temple-like no other, for extravagant ceremonies to please the Sun God.
Only 50 years after the completion of Saqsaywaman, another Empire came from overseas: the Europeans landed in Inca territory, with weapons and diseases, unknown to the friendly Inca hosts, who underestimated the power of the strangers. Then Saqsaywaman was looted and destroyed, its impressive stones were used to build what is now the Cathedral, other churches, and colonial houses. Even though the site is near Cusco, it remained forgotten for a couple of centuries, its great times of ceremony and extravaganza were long gone, until the mid-1900s, when Peruvians showed interest in its conservation and research.
Now we are impressed again at its meaning and its architecture, we are able to relive the stories we heard from previous generations and some others documented by the Spanish chroniclers. On this Online Experience, we will enjoy panoramic views of Saqsaywaman, before we approach the giant stone blocks and admire the imposing architecture they contribute to. We will get acquainted with fascinating details about Inca Religion, and try to see the world through their eyes. Of course, we will also talk about the back-breaking working methods used to carve and transport these giant stone blocks.
After walking through some impressive doorways and alleyways from the Inca period, we will finish our tour with a fabulous view of Cusco City's tiled roofs and hopefully a view of the highest snowcapped mountain of Cusco in the distance: Mt. Ausangate, which stands at the height of 6,380 metres.

Join me for this informative session and let us look at the world through the eyes of this great civilisation of the Andes.

Juan Carlos Yanez

Growing up in remote Cusco, surrounded by Inca Ruins, high mountains and the ancestral culture, was fascinating. It provided me with the inspiration to study and become a Tour Guide. Following the footsteps of my Father, who is a very known Tour Guide, gave me a good kickstart in the industry...the rest is history. Puzzled by other ancient cultures established in mountainous regions of the world, I travelled as a Tour Director to other 33 countries and continued to be fascinated at the parallels of all those cultures, and how religion played a big role in each of them.
