Description

The exceptional site of  Le Puy-en-Velay will amaze you in a thousand ways. The richness of its architecture testifies to a thousand-year-old historical past. With a preserved natural environment, Puy-en-Velay is an ideal place to discover a region shaped by volcanic activities. The beauty of these volcanic landscapes is among the most astonishing, and its monuments among the most emblematic of France.

This online experience will start from Place du Breuil, which was once large pastures that belonged to the bishop of Le Puy. From there we will head to the historic city centre, passing through the site of an ancient gate of the medieval fortified wall. After that, we will go to the Town Hall, where dark events left an indelible mark in the history of the city, especially during the French Revolution. As we make our way to the official starting point of the Camino de Santiago, we will discover the most beautiful mansions that were built during the Renaissance.

You can buy fresh produce from local farmers in the market square: organic vegetables, farmhouse cheeses, green lentils from Puy, artisanal honey and many more. In puy-au-Velay, be sure to eat ethical and authentic products! Our next stop is Upper Town, which is historically the oldest part of town, where the 1st Gallo-Roman inhabitants built the town. This district was very quickly reserved for the nobility who wanted to get closer to the religious power around the cathedral.

We will end our visit in the footsteps of the cathedral, one of the most beautiful and original churches in France. There, we will also learn about the history of the Hôtel-Dieu, a centre of charity in the region since the 13th century.

Meet your Host
Aurelie Deladeuill

I studied History of Art and Architecture at Ecole du Louvre in Paris. Then in 2017, I moved to Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes with a desire to explore and understand the region. Since then, I am a tour guide in Le Puy-en-Velay, leading private groups, families and connoisseurs as well.

I learned many facets of this peculiar city, from its history to its geography so that I am able to answer any of your queries. For example, it is located in a volcanic area which is also reflected in the architecture of the region.

Let me introduce you to the fascinating history and hidden treasures of Le Puy-en Velay, that I will be delighted to share with you.
