Nestled neatly between the two great giants of African Safari (Mozambique to the east and South Africa to the west), Eswatini (Formerly known as Swaziland) is something of a welcome break from the touristic energy that can seem to dominate this section of the continent. From top to bottom this monarchy led country has retained much of its traditional charm, and even in the capital at Mbabane, visitors can still immerse themselves in the bustling markets of Swazi crafts; a feature lost to many of the big-business mega cities of Africa today.
But, like its neighbours, Eswatini’s real attraction is its quintessentially African backcountry. Safari travellers now flock to the Mkhaya Game Reserve and Hlane Royal National Park, where, along with a range of rare plant and insect life, it’s also possible to spot out the so-called Big 5. Eswatini tour guides also list as worth a visit, the hiking trails and game routes along the Ezulwini Valley, a spot famed for its rugged beauty and authentic tribal villages.
