DAY 01

TANA - ANDASIBE

  • Reception and assistance at the airport, before heading east taking the road between Antananarivo and the capital of Tamatave. You would need to cross the steep cliffs that separate the two regions, covered with the luxurious forest of the Angavo.

  • Stop for lunch on the way.

  • Take a halt in Madagascar Exotic Park, a mill, unique on the whole island that allows tourist to discover the biggest diversity of chameleons. It is also a sanctuary for hundreds of species of butterflies and insects.

  • Hit the road again and proceed to Mormanga.

  • Proceed to Andasibe in the afternoon. There are night tours available in Andasibe, to catch a glimpse of the nocturnal species of lemurs.

  • Overnight stay at the hotel.

DAY 02

ANDASIBE

  • Wake up in the morning to explore the park of Andasibe. It is by far one of the most exquisite islands and is the home to of the largest lemurs. Its strong call will wake you up for sure. Many nocturnal species inhabit this place, for instance the tiny Microcèbes and the chameleons and frogs.

  • The flora is also worth your while, full of pandanus, eucalyptus, ravenalas (tree of the traveler) and palissandres. Through this visit, many ponds, decorated with flower lilies will reveal themselves to you, in their mystery.

  • The day ends with a canoe tour of the reserve Vakona and a comfy overnight stay at the hotel.

DAY 03

ANDASIBE - ANTSIRABE

  • Have breakfast at the hotel , and head south. Throughout the plains of the highlands, you’ll discover the first amazing scenery of your trip: the rural villages surrounded by rice fields and the farmers whose lifestyle has not changed.

  • Visit the city of Ambatolampy, well known for its aluminum craftsmanship.

  • Have free lunch and then proceed to Antsirabe, the thermal city constructed and developed by Norwegian missionaries. This city is ranked first in agriculture and the second in industry in the whole country. The beautiful middle class houses downtown are witnesses of this frivolous era.

  • Then, keep on heading south to reach the volcanic lakes of Tritriva and Andraikiba.

  • Arrival & overnight stay at the hotel.

DAY 04

ANTSIRABE

  • Start the day with an exploration tour of Vakinakaratra.

  • It is an 18-kilometer ride to reach the lakes (7 km to Andraikiba and 11 for Tritriva).

  • Once you reach the lakes, there are villages of fishermen on its either sides. To reach the second sacred lake, the Tritriva, it’s another 10 kilometers on a red, dusty and difficult track, travelling past some amazing scenery. It’s a really fertile region, because of the volcanic soil, but it was ravaged by the infamous practice of slash and burn.

  • Once you reach the village of Belazao, take a right and get to the steep-sided lake. Its more than 100 meter deep, and its colours, from green to blue makes the scenery quite magical. The guardian of the lake will welcome you and tell you some tales, related to the history of the lake for the locals.

  • Overnight stay at the hotel.

DAY 05

ANTSIRABE - RANOMAFANA

  • On our way to Ranomafana, stop by the little city of Ambositra. At 1,200 meters of altitude, it’s a commercial crossroad of the Zafimaniry tribes and the rest of Madagascar. It’s the capital of craftsmanship and people come from every corner of the country to sell their crafts.

  • Take a walk in the city and visit the craft shop of a wood sculptor. Have free lunch with traditional songs and dance.

  • Travel to Ranomafana via Betsileo land, the main ethnic group in the province of Fianarantsoa. The typical red clay houses and the intricate shapes of the rice fields are good testimonies of the tremendous work started centuries ago in this region that is particularly hard to cultivate.

  • Night at the hotel in Ranomafana.

DAY 06

RANOMAFANA - FIANARANTSOA

  • Today, proceed to the National Parc of Ranomafana. It is one of the most diverse of the whole island. Everything here is endemic. When you arrive, our team on site will welcome you and take you to the different forests you can find here. The pandanus forest, for instance, is the sanctuary of the rare “Queen of the orchids”, the Eulophiella.

  • Spend the rest of the day exploring the park. See many lemurs, plants, and birds endemic of this rainforest. The flora too is incredible here. The extreme majority of plants are endemic of course, and most of them can be used as diverse medicines. The guide will help you understand this open pharmacy and its secrets.

  • It’s in 1986, right after the discovery of the Hapalémur Aureus, an unknown species of lemur, (filled with cyanide) that the park was created. This day might very well be one of the most striking of your journey in Madagascar.

  • At the end of the visit, and after visiting the thermal pools, it is time to hit the road again as you continue with your journey to Fianarantsoa, the capital of the Betsileo.

  • Upon arrival in Fianarantsoa, visit the shop of Pierrot Men.

  • Overnight stay at the hotel.

DAY 07

FIANARANTSOA - TSARANORO VALLEY

  • In the morning, we head to the Natural Park of Andringitra.

  • Pass through Ambalavao, and take a look of the crafting of Antemoro paper (a savoir faire brought by Arabs during the fifteenth century based on blackberry bark), and the weaving of wild silk. Twice a week, Ambalavao hosts a zebus market. If we are lucky to be visiting one of those days, we’ll be a part of this busy event.

  • Then, visit the Anjah Sustainable Park, a reserve of more than 300 lemurs and a couple species of chameleons. The site was created and is managed by four local villages in a sustainable way while reforesting and bringing medical centers and schools on site. This project is really relevant in making tourism a good way out of poverty for those who need it the most, while protecting and capitalizing on the environment.

  • After a picnic lunch, a tough but beautiful track will lead us through the Gate of the South and to the Tsaranoro Valley. The gigantic massif of the Andringitra can be seen right in front.

  • Get settled in the bungalows, and dedicate the afternoon to the visit of the valley, and the Morarano School.

  • Overnight stay at the hotel.

DAY 08

TSARANORO VALLEY

  • Today, you can indulge in following possible activities:

  • Circuit Sacred Forest: 4 hour long, this circuit starts on an easy track that goes through fields of rive and manioc. They sunbath on the flat rocks of the forest, right near the track. There are Bara and Betsileo tombs on the way, with a natural pool. The village of Soavahiny (“where strangers are welcome”) is not far. Before going back, you can stop by the dispensary. It’s an interesting visit, and you can support the initiative if you wish to.

  • Circuit Chameleon: Starting from the camp, it is a 4-hour walk to reach to top of the famous chameleon. The last part of the walk is a bit steep and caution is necessary. It is definitely worth it as the panorama you get from up there is absolutely breath taking. We recommend doing this early in the morning to avoid the hottest time of the day.

  • Circuit Tsaranoro : Leaving early, it’s a 4 to 5 hour walk to reach the top of Tsaranoro. On the way up, halfway through the foothills, you will discover Bara tombs inside the rock itself. There’s a tough part on the end of the ascension, but we will be rewarded with a breathtaking panorama on the southern mountain ranges that surround us entirely.

  • Paragliding: Nothing more thrilling than paragliding to discover all this valley from the sky. On a comfortable seat, with only the sound of the wind, it is an astounding opportunity as there are five spots to start from on the valley. You can do it for the first time with no problem, but, in order to make that possible.

  • In the evening, traditional singing and dancing, around a campfire.

  • Overnight stay at the lodge.

DAY 09

TSARANORO VALLEY - RANOHIRA

  • Time to leave the Tsaranoro Valley, it’s a three-and-a-half-hour ride to the city of Ranohira, and its famous national park; Isalo.

  • As you head South, the landscape changes drastically. Pretty fast, the panorama flattens and immense tall grass fields surround us. This is the plateau of Ihorombe, land of the Zebu farmers and of the golden horizon. Only one road goes through, the RN7, and people walk huge distances to meet in different villages in these savanna-like plains.
