An old man on Mt Kenya

Reviewed August 29, 2015

Aged 72, I climbed Mt Kenya with James and his friend John. That was some 8 years ago. We hiked to the Eric Shipton hut but skipped the planned next hut on the climb (the Austrian hut?) because James said I was going well. We set of well before sun-up the next morning. There was a section of boulders and rocks, very difficult in the shadows cast by our head torches, but in the end passed onto the snowfield. By now I was finding it tough going on the lungs as the altitude kicked in; but at last we reached Point Lenana after sunrise. We descended, a small tarn far below on our right, and eventually set up camp. I slept in a one-man tent, and during the night there was an ice storm, so that by the morning my bag was caked in frost. That night was tough too, but after hot tea we pressed on to reach the Land-Rover and drive back to Nanuki, then to Nairobi. Being (they said) the oldest man at that time to have done that, they drove me to the Guides' School and a boisterous welcome, before dropping me off at my son's place. James is a good guide, enthusiastic and with a good sense of humour.Try him. I wish him well.

Excellent Kilimandjaro's trek

Reviewed August 14, 2015

We climbed kilmandjaro with James and his brother Frederick as the cook. Both of them were very helpful and friendly. We made it to the top with their help. I would surely recommand James as a Mountain Guide. Thanks again fot the great trek we had.

Gets everyone to the peak.

James and his team were fantastic on our hike of Mount Kenya up-to point Lenana. They regaled us with tales of their encounters with elephants, while growing-up around the mountain and pointing out points of interest on the trail and the history behind each. We were a very diverse group culturally, in outdoor experience, age and fitness level but James did a wonderful job of managing expectations and incredibly we all managed to get to the top without any incidents of altitude sickness which was a first for me for an entire trip. James did a good job of making sure that the entire group was well prepared - even though some of us only met on the day of the hike - by preparing a comprehensive list, with an itinerary and a checklist of required and recommended items. Also top marks for Fredrick, the chef, for making magic happen with the meals especially as he had to cater for a gluten & lactose free diet preference. I would unreservedly recommend James for your next hiking expedition.
