Description

Discover the Anglo-Norman Town of Maynooth on a 3-hour tour. Learn about one of the most important families in Irish history, The Fitzgeralds of Kildare. Visit their 810-year-old Maynooth Castle, from where Ireland was ruled during the 1500s. Also, learn about the Silken Thomas Rebellion of 1534 and more.

  • Visit Maynooth expand_more

The walk typically takes 90 minutes and can be tailored to the interests of the group. It starts at Bradys Bar and finishes back there also.

    • Take a leisurely stroll through the lovely town of Maynooth. This tour brings to life the events that shaped this town and indeed Ireland also. Learn about the importance of the town and how it came to be the ruling town of Ireland during the 1500s, and why Henry VIII was so fearful of The Fitzgerald Family who Lived in Maynooth Castle. The Castle was built in 1204 and was the seat of power and home of the Fitzgerald family.

    • Take a stroll through the grounds of St Patricks College - a Victorian seminary founded in 1795. The present college was created in the 1790s against the background of the upheaval during the French Revolution and the gradual removal of the penal laws. Until this time a significant number of Irish Catholic priests were educated on the European continent, particularly in France.

    • Stops within the college include - St. Marys Church, Stoyte House, St. Joseph's Square, Russell Library, Pugin Hall, Aula Maxima, Rhetoric House, The Science Museum,  and the Pope John Paul II Library.

    • Visit Carton House - Carton House was an estate and great house that was the ancestral seat of the Earls of Kildare and Dukes of Leinster.

What's Included
  • Tea and Coffee break in one of the various cafe or pubs along main street of Maynooth.

  • Toilet break. Public toilets - Manor Mills Shopping Centre.

Know before you go
  • Tours last between 1-3 hours (Coffee and Toilet breaks included)

  • Tours can be arranged to suit the tourists/visitors.

  • I would recommend times between 9:00 am - 11:00 am.

  • The Tour will begin at the Square/Bradys Public House.

  • Child-friendly - Recommended age: 8-13 years.

  • Dress suitably. Most of this walking tour is outside, so please come prepared with rain/waterproof clothes if needed. I also recommend suitable runners or boots because of the walking and the distance involved.

  • Maynooth Castle is closed throughout the winter months as its a seasonal visitor attraction and re-opens in May - September. Don't let this stop you from visiting Maynooth because the tour will stop outside Maynooth Castle along the front. Occasionally access is possible if granted by the Office of Public Works on request. Tour Reviews

Alan is in my opinion an excellent tour guide who is very passionate about his job. He made the tour interesting and funny from start to finish and knew the details very well and was able to answer any questions that I had during the tour. I also took a trip to maynooth castle where Alan works and got a guided tour, which was very interesting as I didn't know much about the castle up to then. I would definitely recommend Alan to anyone interested in taking a tour of Maynooth or Dublin :)

Alan was the guide on my trip to Maynooth Castle. When you look at the castle it is hard to imagine how important it was, not just to the history of Ireland, but to the history of the British Isles. However, Alan brought the history of the castle and its occupants to life. He has a genuine interest in history and this passion comes through on his tours.
