4 Day Trip To The Highlights Of Addis Ababa And Lalibela
Architecture, History, Sightseeing
Travel through the ancient Ethiopian towns, Addis Ababa and Lalibela. Explore the medieval rock-hewn churches, undiscovered crypts and grottoes, that were etched into the red volcanic rock, which lied under the town almost a millennium ago.
Day 1: Major Attractions of Addis Ababa expand_more
On arrival in Addis Ababa, you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Please ensure your flight arrives before 11.30 am so that you can partake in the afternoon city tour.
At 2 pm, after checking into your hotel, you will be collected for your afternoon city tour.
Visit the National Museum, which consists of archaeological collections from as early as Lucy (3.5 Million Years old) and other fossils of primates from earlier periods. This museum also includes archaeological collections from the ancient civilization of Axum and other major sites in northern Ethiopia.
Head towards Merkato, the biggest market in East Africa. Enjoy its bustling outdoor markets, cosy espresso bars, and pastries, along with the burst of music from the cafes and shops. Explore the pungent aromas of spicy cooking of coffee and frankincense from a unique Ethiopian pastiche.
In the evening, enjoy the meal at the well-known Habesha restaurant that serves national food along with traditional dancing and live music. If you want to explore an authentic Ethiopian meal, this is the best restaurant to do it; serving different meat dishes and vegetarian fasting food.
Day 2: Major highlights of Lalibela expand_more
Take an early morning flight from Addis Ababa to Lalibela, where you will stay for two nights.
Explore one of the world's greatest historical and religious sites in the Christian world. Lalibela’s churches are astounding because most are not carved into the rocks but actually freed entirely from them.
Spend two afternoons, exploring the town churches, with your Lalibela tour guide. The Northern Group contains seven churches, a tomb, a chapel and a sunken chapel. At the center of the group is Bet Medhane Alem, measuring 33.5 meters by 23.5 meters and said to be the largest rock-hewn church in the world.
Day 3: Yemrehana Krestos expand_more
In the morning, drive for 42 km out of Lalibela to Yemrehana Krestos - the most incredible church outside Lalibela.
Witness the most stunning sights within the caves of Yemrehana Krestos with the foundation of olive wood panels and features like whitewashed marble panel exteriors.
Day 4: Addis Ababa expand_more
This morning will be at leisure to walk through the cobbled streets of Lalibela. Alternatively, you may choose to take an optional morning mule ride to Ashetan Maryam Church, sitting atop a 3150-meter high mountain overlooking Lalibela.
An afternoon flight takes you back to Addis Ababa.
End your tour on arrival at Addis Ababa's Bole International Airport in the afternoon. If departing from Ethiopia today, your flight out of Addis Ababa should not be booked to depart before 7.30 pm.
Additional post-tour accommodation is also available in Addis Ababa (at additional cost).
Experienced, English-speaking local Lalibela leader for sightseeing activities only
I stayed in Bahir Dar in 2012 for a few days before heading to Gondar to trek. Mengistu helped me find a horse to ride. I had in mind to go horse riding through some trails, but ended up riding a race pony in a remote area just outside of Bahir Dar. Mengistu was very reliable in arranging transportation and helping me navigate. It was one of my most memorable experiences of my trip!
Hi Mengistu we are doing great how about you ? It was really nice time with you @ Bahirdar me and all my family we say thank you again for the service you provide for us. I belive you enjoy life on your own Country there is nothing better than home. So Menge have a great day and we will communicate.
Mengistu was a very relaxed guide and we enjoyed getting to know him. We had a lot to see in a short time and he kept us on track. The itinerary was arranged to try and arrive when the locations were less crowded and Mengistu knows the short-cuts to save time. We also went to a great local restaurant and stopped to buy dates at a roadside vendor.
We would highly recommend Mengistu as a fun and reliable guide. He was at the hotel each morning on time to meet us and ensured that everything went smooth. Mengistu's English is very good so it was very easy to understand all the great information and directions he gave us.
You can't go wrong having Mengistu as a tour guide in Ethiopia.

I wanted to send a brief note to thank you for providing great service. Mengistu is a very smart guide. I really enjoyed the trip to Ethiopian Historic Route. I've already told a few of my friends in Sydney about you, so you might get some more visitors from Australia some day!
I wanted to thank you for arranging such a great trip. My friend and I had a wonderful time seeing the historic route.
I'll be sure to pass on your name and information to friends traveling to Ethiopia.
Do you make arrangements for people traveling in other parts of Ethiopia, or just the Historic Route of Ethiopia?
