Our family could not have imagined having a more meaningful trip to Ethiopia.  Our youngest daughers were adopted from Ethiopia 12 years ago, so we decided that our family of six would experience the sites and culture of the beautiful country togehter.  Muluken went above and beyond.  Despite the orphanage being closed, he connected us with the orphanage director who knew our girls well.  She was able to provided us with information we didn't know and give us important family documents.  Because of Muluken's engagement and persistence, we were able to locate and connect with dozens of our daughters' family members, including a brother and sister we didn't know existed.  Of course, this was not a part of the original plan, yet Muluken adjusted because he knew it was important to us.

It is not an overstatement to say that this trip was life changing because of Muluken's commitment to giving our family the best experience possible.  This would have been a 5-star rating without the orphanage and family elements.  I wish I could give him bonus stars.

My husband and I had an excellent day out with Muluken (tour guide) and Birhanu (driver) last week. Muluken is a walking dictionary on Ethiopia. Ask him anything! We learned so much about Ethiopian history and culture.

Muluken picked us up from our hotel at the agreed time. He was extremely punctual (something that is very important to us!) It was our first time in Ethiopia and we were a little anxious about safety etc but it took us about 2 minutes of being with Muluken to relax and trust him and Birhanu. They are both really lovely and trustworthy guys.

Birhanu's driving was excellent too. I am quite a nervous passenger usually but I felt completely comfortable with Birhanu's driving.

I would highly recommend booking a tour with Merit Tours. The city tour we did was excellent as we were short on time and saw SO much more in a day than we would have without Muluken. I particularly enjoyed the lunch in the local house. Also I loved the church murals on top of Mount Entoto: Two things we definitely wouldn't have been able to do ourselves.

Another small touch I liked was that Muluken uses WhatsApp which made it really easy to be in contact before the tour. Also very nice that he provides water as I forgot to bring any!

We really fell in love with Ethiopia and its people. We will definitely be back and will bring our kids next time. I think kids our kids' age (9 and 11) and over would love it. When we are back, we will be contacting Muluken for a much longer tour of his beautiful country!

Highly recommend this company and happy to answer any questions!

I have just come back from a city tour of Addis Abeba with Muluken. Well chosen sights, thorough knowledge of the country, its history, culture and current events. Muluken was accompanied by an equally good driver, they would make a perfect team. Both were friendly, polite, punctual and fun to talk to. We went to a viewpoint above the Megenagna bus hub, to the Holy Trinity Church, to a coffee cerenony in an informal cafe on Mount Entoto, to the National Museum, to Mercato (which itself would be fascinating enough) and to the African Union Building. Good driving and safety awareness especially around Mercato, you could either stay in the car or walk some hundred meters through the bustling market. This tour gave me tons of impressions and a good overview of Addis Abeba. I would definitely book Muluken again.

Had a great experience with Muluken.

He was able to customize his resources and knowledge  to adapt to the things I was interested in.

We very much enjoyed our tour with Muluken.  We learned much about Ethiopian history and culture and gained an insight into how some people live in and around Addis Ababa. He shared his knowledge in a relaxed and friendly manner in excellent English.  Without his tour we would not have had the confidence to visit some of the locations and so would have missed out.

We were in Addis for a stopover. We did the tour and found that this is the best and maybe the only way to get to know the city. Addis is a very interesting city but I do not recommend that you try to walk out on your own because it can be dangerous. The guide is extremely knowledgeable and prepared to give tourists all the information to understand this country in the most diverse aspects. The van picked us up at the hotel at a fixed time and we were extremely pleased with the day and with the locals we met. Highly recommend.

Muluken and his driver Nigussu did a great job. I visited Ethiopia with two friends and we truly enjoyed our day with Muluken. He is very knowledgeable, friendly, and eager to answer questions. Thanks for such a memorable and wonderful day!

I traveled North part of Etiopia with 15 Japanese.

Visited many ruins, and had very nice time with him.

He knows many things about Etiopian history and culture, talk very soft.

I know all Japanese will like him.

We had hired Muluken for a half day shopping excursion in Addis to see some markets and pick up gifts before our return journey home. Because his level of English is so very good he was able to explain to us many things about the city and country we hadn’t yet learned in our 10 days in the country. He and his driver were also very accommodating and willing to make the day into whatever we wanted it to be and on a whim took us to a few special shops to find specific things we were looking for.  Thank you for giving us such a nice and productive afternoon out in your beautiful country!

  • jeremy.yung

I had a great time with Muluken, he genuinely enjoys explaining history and the background behind a lot of sites we went to.

He demonstrated flexibility and a willingness to go off the agenda when asked e.g. when I asked for some coffee, no problem.

He is a friendly guy and I highly recommend taking this tour if you have a day. I'll be back because one day is not enough to see it all. I will definitely be contacting Muluken when I return!

I spent a great day with absolute nice guides in Addis Ababa. They have shown all the big spots along with all necessary information to me. I will never forget that day. It was a phantastic experience. Thank you very much.

  • lamar.timmins

I made a last minute decision to visit Ethiopia on my week off, so i only had 5 days in the country after travel time from Canada. My instinct was to do everything myself, but after reading online about travelling there, i realized i might need help. I found Muluken on Toursbylocals. I simply told Muluken that i like to try food, coffee, see camels, landscapes, love photography and ride my bike (yes, i bring my bike whereever i go). He put together an in depth itinerary that met all my needs. We went back and forth a few times to fine tune everything. Im so glad i went ahead with it.

Muluken is an absolute professionnal. Nothing went wrong. He put together a fantastic team of 1 driver, 1 cook and other affiliates along the way. Food was excellent as well.  He is full of knowledge and you can ask him anything.

What i noticed is that the 3 of them, really have you rbest interest, whereby they see you interested in taking a photo so the driver slows down, or you might be sitting on a stone, but theyll pull out a chair for you. A ot of little gestures like that make everything so smooth.

On a few stops, Muluken would either show you more or take you somewhere where the rest of the bigger tour groups  dont go. The team worked extra hard to accomodate my bicycle and im very thankful for that.

I had issues with my drone at the airports. Muluken was extremely helpful.

To sum up, Muluken was an absolute asset to my trip and made my travel dreams come true. I will for sure be back and will for sure contact Muluken. So should you!

All good - very informative guide and strikes the right balance between being a good guide while also not being too "in you face"

  • trav1945

Mr. Muluken is a true professional who made me feel comfortable and relaxed from the moment we met until the end of the tour. He appeared to be very knowledgeable and took as much time as was necessary to answer a question to your satisfaction. This ,in addition to his excellent command of the English language, is the reason  I would certainly use him in the future and would definitely  recommend him to anyone who would like to have a very pleasant and memorable tour.

I just finished a great 7-day trip with Muluken Girma through northern Ethiopia, in mid October 2017.

We traveled to: Bahir Dar, Gondar,Simien Mountains NP, Axum, Lalibela and Addis Ababa. Ethiopia is an amazingly beautiful place; the people are the friendliest you will find. Make the trip and you will not be disappointed. I will refrain from making this a review of Ethiopia its cities/sites, and focus on a review of Muluken as my guide on this trip.

I don’t think my trip and time with Muluken could have gone any smoother. All of our communication prior to the trip was detailed and timely. All transportation was safe, comfortable and clean. The drivers Muluken hired for us were all friendly to travel with and talk to, some of these drivers we send multiple days with. This also included a boat in Bahir Dar.

The lodging that Muluken had recommended or provided in places I could not book on-line, were all good places. Some were great places, like Bahir Dar , Simien Mountains NP & Lalibela.

Muluken provided great opportunities to talk with and interact with locals throughout the trip, stopping on the roadside to visit with families, farmers or walking through busy local markets, and many others. These were some of my favorite experiences.

Muluken was always providing me with great information about the people and places we were experiencing as well as Ethiopian history and culture. His knowledge is one of his most impressive skills. Muluken also provided great local guides at some of the specific sites for even more detailed information; all of these were good experiences.

I always felt safe with Muluken and that he was always looking out for us and looking for unique opportunities to experience Ethiopia. Muluken is a clean, organized and thoughtful man. I could continue with praise but I think you get the point. If you have the opportunity to travel with Muluken you will not be disappointed.

As a solo traveler, Muluken and our driver went above and beyond to make me feel comfortable.  The tour itself was great, and was a nice mix of activities to do in a single day.  Looking forward to my next trip!

  • lisalis.harrison

Muluken was a fantastic guide on my one day tour of Addis. Not only did he show me all the main sights but even showed me the local hospitality and a chance to try "tella" on our trip back from Entoto. I was in Addis for a work trip, and had a spare day to see the sights. I was a little worried about booking alone as a woman on my own, but Muluken put me straight at ease. His local knowledge was fantastic and English superb. And he even laughed at my jokes!! A very memorable day, and I will be choosing Muluken for my next adventure when in Ethiopia!

  • joseph.mulkern

I did a custom two day trip excursion with Muluken to the key sites both north and south of Addis Ababa and I could not have hoped for a better experience. Very knowledgeable, easy going, prompt,  and flexible. In addition him and the driver with both great conversationalists, the time on the road passed quickly. In short, he delivered an experience, not a tour. In addition he attend to the small details in ensuring my comfort.

    Outstanding.  Completely exeded my expectations.

  • rama

He was punctual and friendly and eager to show places of interest despite the rain on that day. Visiting and introducing me to a local family in the mountain was a highlight that I will remember for ever.
