Sentarum Lake National Park is an area of interconnected seasonal lakes. Located in a remote area of Kapuas Hulu Regency, West Borneo. Sentarum lake has a long history of human settlement, up to some hundred years and the area was inhabited by various ethnic groups who visited the lake during the dry season fish and returned to the village afterwards. As time went by, small groups began to settle in hamlets as they exist to this day.

Their extensive knowledge of the local ecosystem has ensured the ability to sustain and protect the local environment. Sentarum lake also plays an important role in the settlement along the Kapuas River. Main cities such as Putussibau, Sanggau, Sekadau, Sintang and the provincial capital Pontianak depend strongly on the lakes as the heart of water system in Upper West Borneo.


During the wet season, the excess water is collected in the lakes. This is to prevent flooding to downstream regions. In the dry season, the water is distributed to provide for people a long the Kapuas.

Sentarum Lake in dry season

The lake experiences a wet season for most of the year and the stillness of the water creates breathtaking reflections of the surrounding riverbanks and trees. Hire a sampan (rowboat) or motorized canoe from the local and enjoy the flaming sunsets over the lakes.

The local people recommended to visit this beautiful lake twice, once in a dry season and once in a wet season. So you can see the difference of this lake.
