Founded by the Trojans and the birthplace of Homer, Izmir (Formerly the Greek city of Smyrna) is nowadays the third largest city of Turkey and the second biggest port of the country after Istanbul. Only in Izmir can one find the perfect mixture of the modern Mediterranean Europe and the traditional Turkey.

The city hosted many civilizations (the Tojans, the Hitites, the Sea Peoples, the Greeks,  the Lydians, the Persians, the Romans, the Byzantines, the Selcuks, the Ottomans ) during its 8.500 years history.

An extraordinary convergence of major religions-Paganism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam- has occurred and matured in the land of Turkey.  For many years, different ethnic and  religious groups such as Greeks, Armenians, Jews and Laventines lived together in harmony in this beautiful city.

With its long-standing history and multicultural structure, İzmir welcomes many historical values such as churches, mosques, synagogues, inns, Turkish baths, ruins, agora  and historical bazaar.

At the same time;  the city is now home to a variety of world heritages such as historic town of Birgi, Ephesus and Pergamon.

Today, İzmir lives by its seafront KORDON (promenade),which, especially around leafly Alsancak, is as fetching and lively as any in the world.

Modern-day Izmir, bursting with life and energy and all historical backround waits to be explored.
