Cycling in Africa

Mount Meru-Tanzania

Paddle around Mount Kilimanjaro and see all its different faces. See rural Africa at its best and experience the views, the history, the culture and its friendly people, first hand. We will assist with all the arrangements and our backup staff and vehicles will provide full backup to cater for all cycling needs.

DAY 01

  • Meet our staff who will brief you on 3 Days and 2 Nights Cycle Challenge in Tanzania and later transfer to Moshi.

  • Overnight at Kitolie Home & Lodge.

DAY 02

Moshi to Olpopongi Maasai Village (77kms)

  • We leave our hotel and cycle downhill for the first few kilometres on tarmac roads into Moshi.

  • We then continue for approximately 30 km on the tarmac and on rolling terrain towards Arusha. We turn towards the bustling Maasai town of Sanyu Juu and continue cycling through lush landscapes with only a few moderate hills.

  • We will be greeted by local children as we cycle from village to village. The scenery gradually becomes more arid and scrub-like as the road surface changes from smooth asphalt to a more challenging, bumpier dirt road. Banana and mango plantations will be replaced by more typical Tanzanian bush-land vegetation, dominated by the impressive Acacia trees.

  • We reach our overnight camp at the Olpopongi Maasai Village where we will have the opportunity to explore the village and will be given an insight into the authentic Maasai Way of life through the museum they keep.

  • We will be treated to a barbeque dinner around the campfire and entertained by the Maasai dancing and singing.

DAY 03

Olpopongi Maasai Village to Arusha (76kms)

  • We will start the day by cycling through an area sandwiched between Mt Kilimanjaro and Mt Meru (4565m), considered to be an active volcano.

  • The volcanic landscape offers a striking difference to the lush surroundings of Kilimanjaro. There is the potential to see lots of wildlife along the route today including Giraffe, Impala, Baboon, monkey and variety of birds. Once again as we cycle through this parched landscape we will witness day to day life as we pass by a number of Maasai villages. Cycling becomes much smoother again when we reach the not too busy Nairobi – Arusha road. The price to pay for the smoother surface is a number of medium grade climbs.

  • A long descent awaits us as we finish the day by cycling into the bustling town of Arusha, the main town in northern Tanzania where our overnight hotel awaits us.

DAY 04

Arusha Town to MtowaMbu - Total distance 114km Accumulative ascent 600m

  • We will leave the busy town of Arusha towards some of the most famous national parks in the world.

  • We will cycle on a very good tar road and drop steadily down away from Mount Meru. The distance today is greater, but the terrain is much easier. We will pass lots of small villages along the way.

  • We will end our cycling in the town of Mto Wa Mbu, adjacent to the Lake Manyara National Park. This park is well known for its tree-climbing lions. It is not unusual to see elephants on the last part of the ride.

  • Overnight at lodge.

DAY 05

MtowaMbu to Ngorongoro Gate - Total distance 58km Accumulative ascent 1156m

  • Over to Lake Manyara. The tar road is very good, but very steep in places. We will pass a number of villages and beautiful countryside as we steadily climb towards the gate of the world famous Ngorongoro National Park. As we approach the gate, the ecology turns greener and the trees increase in size. Look out for monkeys and baboons along the way.

  • We will cycle to the gate of the park and after celebrating this tough challenge, we cycle back down to the town of Karatu where we will stay the night and celebrate a tough week of cycling.

  • Overnight at a lodge, Karatu.
