Since the very first days of its foundation at the hands of the seafaring Greeks, the ancient town of Nabeul has been a bustling trading post, where merchants from right across the Mediterranean basin came to tout their foodstuffs and spices, or to haggle with Tunisian locals for pieces of the colourful pottery that still decorates bazaars around town.
With their dinar at the ready, most visitors today begin by following their Nabeul tourist guide to the sprawling and heady Camel Market (which is noticeably sparse on camels), where locals tout reams of colourful carpet and kaleidoscopic vases. Others start with a carriage ride through the old town, or a jaunt to the excellent Archaeological Museum, where pottery remains from the Punic periods rub shoulders with mysterious Carthaginian monoliths and Roman jewellery.
When the history gets too much and you find yourself pining for a dose of Tunisia’s Mediterranean-come-Berber staples, then head over to 7th November Place, where al fresco eateries and aromatic cafes churn out steamy tagines and gritty Greek brews.
