Highlights
- Walking tour, live-streamed from the vibrant La Boca district
- Visit popular Caminito for its street art museum and colourful houses
Description
La Boca is known as both "The Immigrants District" and "The South American Naples". For decades, La Boca has been home to immigrants coming in from Europe. Millions of them, mainly from Italy, came to Buenos Aires to start a new life. The poor inhabitants at one time relied upon whatever was leftover from boat paint to beautify their homes. This resulted in a compelling variety of colours that made this district the most visited place in town .
We will start our live-streamed online experience by the Riachuelo, a little river that runs towards the Rio de la Plata, the widest river in the world. Due to this location, the neighbourhood was named La Boca, or 'the mouth' in Spanish. It was the city´s first port and the entry point for both colonisers and immigrants.
I will then embark on a short walk along the promenade to get to Benito Quinquela Martin Complex. The man, a renowned painter internationally, was responsible for the development and revival of La Boca. He left a fine art museum, a theatre, a school and other buildings, all decorated by him with murals.
We will visit Caminito, one of the must-see attractions of Buenos Aires. It is a short alley that hosts a street art museum full of tango dancers, artists, street performers and colourful houses on the sides. Would you like to learn a few steps of Tango? I can improvise a short Tango lesson on my way.
Lastly, we will visit the La Boca Volunteer Firemen Square, named after the local fire department which is celebrated for its bravery in fighting against fires, floods and epidemics from its founding to the present.
