On this unique Online Experience, we will discover what makes this middle-sized town in Emilia-Romagna an attractive destination for curious and unconventional travellers.
Start with learning why Ravenna is said to be the "Capital of Mosaics", as you explore the flooded mosaic crypt of the Basilica of Saint Francis, and visit a mosaic workshop to see how mosaics are made still following the ancient techniques. Then walk in the so-called Zona Dantesca (Dante’s zone), an area dedicated to the father of the Italian language where silence is maintained by the citizens of Ravenna to respect his memory. We will stop by Dante's tomb, where you will learn the tangled story of his remains that have been possessively preserved by the locals for centuries. As we walk by the Piazza del Popolo and its surrounds, I will point out how the buildings in Ravenna are sinking due to its soft soil. Finally, we will visit the Basilica of Saint John the Evangelist, the most ancient church in town, where you will be told the story of Galla Placidia, the great Roman Empress.
