Description
Come, join our native tour guide on a walking tour around the remains of Kom El Dikka, located in the heart of the modern city. The word 'Kom-el-Dikka' in Arabic means the "hill of rubble" or the "hill of the benches". The ruins are an open museum for the Roman city including a Roman amphitheatre, public baths, lecture halls, cistern, houses and palatial villas like the Villa of Bird featuring an outstanding mosaic of a colourful variety of birds which adorns the floor, dating back to Ist century AD. It is also the site of some sunken monuments from the site of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the ancient seven wonders of the world.
As we explore this underground city in this online experience, your guide will tell you some interesting facts such as how the 4th century Roman Amphitheater is the only one of its kind in Egypt, and has survived three different periods; the Roman, Byzantine and the Early Islamic eras. The Roman Amphitheater was discovered by mere coincidence in 1960 during the construction of a governmental building, and is still in excavation by an Egyptian polish expedition, and we may even catch them at work!
