Description
Starting the tour from the Peace Hotel, we will visit the Bund riverfront taking in the magnificent views of the city and see the hotels of the Kadoorie family. You will learn about the Baghdadi-Jewish history of Shanghai.
Next, you will visit the Hongkou district, also called the "Shanghai Ghetto." You will visit various points of interest in the district, including the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum. The guide will show you around the district and explain how the Jewish refugees used to live.
For lunch, you will have the option of tasting the local food or a kosher meal at the Shanghai Jewish Center. There is an active local Jewish community in the city. Guided by a local rabbi, you will visit the synagogue, regardless of affiliation knowledge of Hebrew and level of commitment.
Later, you will see the forgotten cemeteries of the city. Most of the old cemeteries in Shanghai were first neglected and then destroyed during the Cultural Revolution. The graves were left consolidated at the Wanguo Cemetery in Hongqiao, now a part of the Soong Ching Ling Mausoleum. You will also find the graves of Sir Elly Kadoorie & Lady Laura, who died trying to save their children’s nanny in a fire. In the end, you will head back to the Bund and visit the former British club and the famous long bar.
