Highlights
- Trek to the mountains through the Hottentots Holland Kloof
- Capture spectacular views of the landscape
Description
Start the tour at 7:00 am and travel from Somerset West east up the Sir Lowry's Pass and over the mountain to the starting point. At around 7:30 am, set out on your walk. The trail is a 5 km return walk and takes about 4 to 5 hours to complete, depending on the stops and weather. The first 2.5 km of the walk is an uphill trail to the mountaintop and not that difficult. In the neck, atop the mountains ridge, the old pass is an easy walk and takes about an hour to explore around and traverse a short way down the side of the opposite mountain to view the spectacular rusts still visible in the rocks. So once at the top of the kloof, the track starts to dip steeply down, and it is here where the ruts that the wagon wheels carved into the rocks become visible. The Dutch and British settlers at the Cape built this rough pass called the Hottentots Holland Kloof Pass following the Gantouw route. Also, while taking a bird's eye view from the top of the pass, are two historic cannons that were used to communicate over the mountains. Midway through the adventure, we will stop for a break to either some refreshments or our lunch.

I am passionate about the natural environment, the geology and palaeontological history of our planet, and the vast ecological interactions and relationships between the living and the non-living! Every day out in nature is a new opportunity to learn, to experience, to feel, and to grow. It is all of the above that provides me with ample enthusiasm, passion, and motivation to share with people the wonders of the "Great Outdoors" on educational guided nature excursions! As a qualified nature guide and conservationist, I offer and provide an educational day or overnight hikes, ambles, and walks into the mountains, ecosystems, and habitats of the Western Cape. As a nature guide, my responsibilities include the logistical management of tours and excursions, preparation of hikes and/or walks, catering, client safety, navigation, and map reading skills when and where necessary, identification of fauna and flora, emergency evacuations and first aid. I also freelance as a nature guide for various other originations and groups.
