Description
Nikko located 140 km north of Tokyo, is a popular destination for both local and foreign tourists. The popular places in the city include the mausoleum of shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu (Nikkō Tōshō-gū) and his grandson Iemitsu (Iemitsu-byō Taiyū-in), and the Futarasan Shrine, which dates to the year 767. The city is also popular for its hot springs. The Nikko National Park has some of the most spectacular waterfalls and scenic trails. The city is well-known for its monkeys that walk around the town in the winter looking for food.
There is a popular Japanese saying “Never say ‘Kekko’ until you’ve seen Nikko”, where Kekko means beautiful or magnificent. Visit Nikko, the birthplace of the shoguns, and see the world-famous temples and statues. Here are some of the highlights of the city which you can visit as per your interests:
- Cedar Avenue Nikko
- Nikko Botanical Garden
- Shrines and Temples in the City (Nikkō Tōshō-gū, Futarasan Shrine, and Rinnō-Ji)
- Tōshō-gū (The Three Wise Monkeys)
- Lake Chūzenji
- Jizo statues on the Kanman Walk. A little outside the main city, locals often ask visitors to count the statues while walking and to recount while walking back. The number is often different, fueling a legend amongst locals.
