Visit El Coyotepe Fortress, constructed to protect the city of Masaya against the invading armies of North America by President Zelaya in 1893. From this strategic location, Zelaya’s men could see the invading forces approaching. This fortress was later refurbished by the ruling Somoza regime, which added a dungeon to the fortress to serve as a jail for their political prisoners.
See the Fortress Dungeon. It has been documented that well over eight hundred prisoners were held at the fortress at one time. Walking through the dungeon is an eerie experience.
Experience the fear originally felt by the prisoners. Walk through the dungeon that has barely any sources of light, and torture chambers. The dungeons of the El Coyotepe Fortress continued to be used as a prison, even through the Sandinistas reign, but were eventually handed over to the care and use of the Boy Scouts.
Stroll through the Masaya market, the most important art market of Nicaragua that sells all type of hand made stuff.
See the Indigenous village of Monimbo, one of the two most important indigenous villages in Nicaragua.
Relax in the crystalline waters of the deepest and cleanest crater lake in Central America: Laguna de Apoyo. It is a clean, blue, and thermally vented 48-square kilometre water body contained inside the crater of the Apoyo Volcano.
