1 Day Culture tour itinerary for Essaouira & Marrakech: Go On Excursion To This Moroccan Port City
Get a chance to explore the port city of Essaouira via Marrakech in Morocco. Visit the Portuguese Forts, breathtaking beach, and magnificent Medina.
With its picture-postcard stone ramparts and turrets, and its almost perfectly preserved maze-like Medina, Essaouira is the most popular of the Atlantic coastal towns. Inside the town walls, it is all light and charm, a labyrinth of narrow lanes, white washed houses, tranquil squares and artisans in tiny workshops.
Many Europeans and artists, enchanted by the place, have invested in Medina properties and an arty expat influence is evident throughout the town.
Essaouira was known as Sidi Megdoul during the time of 11th-century Geographer al-Bakri, as he reported. In the 16th-century, a corruption of this name became known to the Portuguese as Mogador or Mogadore.
The Medina of Essaouira (Mogador) is a UNESCO World Heritage site, as an example of a late-18th century fortified town.
