Come to your first itinerary stop for the day, the Temple of the Tooth Relic. Sri Dalada Maligawa or the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a Buddhist temple in the city of Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is located in the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy, which houses the relic of the tooth of Buddha. Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country. Kandy was the last capital of the Sri Lankan kings and is a UNESCO World Heritage site partly due to the temple. The brick wall which runs along the moat and Bogambara lake is known as water waves wall.
Proceed to stroll around the Kandy Lake next to the temple. The lake was built in 1807 by King Sri Vikrama Rajasinh. The most alluring is the island situated in the middle of the lake. With plush palm trees and bamboo thickets, the island, in the beginning, was the bathing place of the queens and the ladies of the court. Strolling around the lake is the favourite pastime of many natives as well as tourists, particularly during the evening around the Temple of the Tooth. A few seating spots allow the onlookers to relax and just admire the beauty.
Next, head to Bahirawakanda. Sri Maha Bodhi Viharaya is a Theravada Buddhist temple in Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is located in Bahirawakanda, approximately 2 km (1.2 mi) from the city centre. The temple is known for its giant Buddha statue. The statue of Buddha is depicted in the position of the Dhyana Mudra, the posture of meditation associated with his first Enlightenment, and can be seen from almost everywhere in Kandy. It stands at 26.83 m (88.0 ft) high and is one of the tallest Buddha statues in Sri Lanka.
Witness a spectacular cultural dance performance. Held in Kandy town, this cultural show depicts various forms of Kandyan dancing which was once native to the area but has now spread to different regions of the island. Originated from a dance performed by Indian shamans who came to the island, Kandyan dancing plays an important role in Sri Lankan culture and is a much-anticipated event during perahera processions. During the show, you will see several dances which depict the graceful movements of birds and animals, which trace their origins back to the ancient ritual known as the Kohomba Kapkariya, as well as energetic acrobatic performances where the men perform a series of leaping pirouettes and stunts such as plate-spinning and the dramatic ‘firewalk’ which ends the show.
Travel back to Colombo once the performance ends and get dropped off at your hotel.
