Sinharaja Forest Reserve- Day Excursion
This is an ideal day trip for nature enthusiasts who visit Sri Lanka. Travel from the Negombo/Colombo etc. and explore Sinharaja Rain Forest which is located in south-west Sri Lanka and the largest lowland rainforest in Sri Lanka. This UNESCO-listed, richly bio-diverse habitat, bordered by rivers, is rich in wildlife, including rare mammals and many endemic birds. More than 60% of the trees are endemic and many of them are considered rare. There is endemic wildlife especially birds, etc.
Unlike most Sri Lankan national parks, access to the forest is only on foot, along slippery trails, pointing out the wealth of stunning plant, bird and animal life, accompanied by your guide.
Trekking Sinharaja Rain Forest within 4-6 hours. Sinharaja Forest Reserve is introduced as a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1988. This tropical rain forest believed to be home for almost 50% of Sri Lanka’s endemic wildlife. In this tour, you can explore the lifestyle of the creatures. The high diversity of vegetation within the reserve has made it a favourable sanctuary for various species of birds, mammals, reptiles, insects, fish, amphibians and plant life; all co-existing within the ecosystem. Explore this world heritage site at least one time in your lifespan.
Birds tend to move in mixed feeding flocks, invariably led by the fearless Sri Lanka Crested Drongo and the noisy orange-billed babbler. Of Sri Lanka's 26 endemic birds, the 20 rainforest species all occur here, including the elusive red-faced malkoha, green-billed coucal and Sri Lanka blue magpie. Reptiles include the endemic green pit viper and hump-nosed vipers, and there are a large variety of amphibians, especially tree frogs.
Invertebrates include the endemic common birdwing butterfly and leeches. The rare endemic birds to be seen in the Sinharaja Rain Forest are the Red-faced Malkoha, the Sri Lanka Blue Magpie, the Ashy-headed Babbler, White-headed Starling and Serendib scops owl etc. The green-billed Coucal has been given the title of being the rarest of Sri Lankan birds.
