Wat Xiengthong

Luang Prabang-Laos

See this cultural capital of Laos for its charming downtown streets and glittering pagodas. Beyond these, lies a kaleidoscope of colorful hill tribes, stunning natural landscapes, and mystical caves which all waits to be explored.

DAY 01

LUANG PRABANG ARRIVAL (D)

  • Meet your private tour guide at your hotel at 16:30 hours for an evening during which you will see how the locals live.

  • First you will join the local petanque players. Try your skills at this sport, which is a favorite pastime of the Lao people. They will cheer you on and give you hints as you play a few games and enjoy snacks and drinks. This is great fun for all ages and a brilliant introduction to the charming Lao culture.

  • As the sun begins to set, climb the 328 steps to the top of Mount Phousi to enjoy a panoramic view of the city and the surrounding countryside.

  • Descend to the Mekong side of the peninsula and find yourself in the evening hill tribe market. Here you may find plenty of local souvenirs to buy such as handicrafts and textiles.

  • Enjoy dinner on the banks of the Mekong at a Sindat Restaurant. Sindat is a Lao style barbeque which is very popular with the locals.

  • You will be transferred back to your hotel by 2100 hours.

  • If you prefer to stay out later then you can take a tuk-tuk.

  • Overnight stay at Luang Prabang.

DAY 02

LUANG PRABANG - FULL DAY TOUR (B)

  • After breakfast, explore this charming city which is a UNESCO world heritage site, Luang Prabang.

  • Visit Wat Xiang Thong, the most important Buddhist monastery in the country, Wat Visoun, Wat Khili, and Wat Mai.

  • Later, visit the former Royal Palace, now a National Museum where you will find ornate, gilded, and brocaded reception rooms, as well as Buddha and spectacular artefacts including the Prabang, a large holy image, which was given in the 14th century by the Khmers to King Fa Ngum.

  • At sunset, climb the nearby temple-topped hill of Mount Phousi where you will catch a spectacular view out over the town and the river.

  • From there, explore the Night Market, where you can find a lovely selection of handmade textile by local and hill tribe people surrounding Luang Prabang.

  • Overnight stay in Luang Prabang.

DAY 03

LUANG PRABANG - ALMS GIVING & KUANG SI WATERFALLS (B,L)

  • For early risers, there is a very special dawn visit to watch the monks collecting the alms. As the sun begins to rise, long lines of orange-robed monks leave their pagodas and walk barefoot down the streets collecting offerings from Luang Prabang residents. It is a beautiful, serene ceremony that highlights the spiritualism of the Laos people.

  • Return to the hotel for breakfast.

  • Take a short journey through the Luang Prabang countryside to Kuang Si Waterfalls (32 km southwest of the city). Along the way, you will drive through beautiful landscapes of rice fields, hills, and small villages. There are also viewpoints overlooking the Mekong River.

  • Stop en-route to visit a small village which is home to one of the area’s many ethnic minorities. You will have an opportunity to learn about their traditions and culture, much of which has remained unchanged for centuries.

  • Upon reaching Kuang Si Waterfall, relax and enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings. The water tumbles down a large drop and cascades gently into several cool, clear pools where you can enjoy a refreshing swim (please dress modestly).

  • Enjoy a delicious picnic lunch next to the falls. For the adventurous, it is possible to walk to the top of the falls via a steep track where stunning views await you at the top.

  • You might also like to visit the bear sanctuary which is next to the falls, run by Free The Bears Fund Inc. There are currently 23 Asiatic Black Bears living in the sanctuary, which has saved them from poaching. The main threat to these bears is poaching due to the use of their bile in Chinese medicine. You can read about their habits and observe their playful nature, whilst learning about the difficulties they are facing.

  • Transfer back to Luang Prabang this afternoon.

  • Overnight stay in Luang Prabang.

  • Luang Prabang is a small, dreamy town on the Mekong and Nam Khan Rivers, in a beautiful mountain setting. From 1353 until 1545 it was the capital of Lane Xang before power was transferred to Vientiane. Despite the move, Luang Prabang remained the seat of monarchical power, and when the kingdom broke up in 1694, one of the deceased king's grandsons established a rival kingdom to those in Vientiane and Champassak. Though weakened, the Luang Prabang royalty endured until 1975, when after the reign of 63 kings it was formally dissolved.
