While in Nepal I would highly suggest doing a free walking tour or a trek with Himkala adventures. Shiva, the free walking tour guide, has been running tours for many years and knows much about Katmandu and Nepal's history, religion, culture, and he will take you not where the tourists go but where the locals go; to the most authentic temples, markets, gardens and sites.

I have done 3 days tour around Kathmandu with Shiva through Himkala Adventure not long ago, I don’t usually pay for tours but I decided to do it this time since I really wanted to learn about the Nepalese culture. Shiva really introduced me to the real Nepal, he talked to me about meditation while going to the Kopan monastery and also told me about his experience during the earthquake while walking around Thamel and the Basantapur square as well as the story of the square which I didn’t know is a UNESCO world heritage. Overall, it was a great experience; I will totally recommend Shiva for future trekkers and travelers.

Either him or a guide he is working with will bring you everywhere around Nepal, either for cultural visits, on trekking tour.

A last point to convince you : Shiva is also working in an orphanage (which opened after 2015 earthquake), and the benefits from himkala adventure mainly goes to this orphanage.
