On my first day in Rio I joined an Express Tour to Corcovado, SugarLoaf and a brief visit to some of the major attractions in the city. It was a good introduction to Rio. On my second day I wanted to go on a helicopter flight over Corcovado, but they didn’t have enough passengers to fly. As I wasn’t interested in other tours, one of the staff at the hotel reception asked me if I’d like to go to Niteroi across the bay with a private tour guide. It sounded great to me. So he called Flandrio to check his availability. On the following day, Flandrio met me in the foyer of the hotel and took me to Niteroi in his car. Along the way he asked me what kind of things and places I wanted to see. So I mentioned a few and explained why. With his flexibility he quickly created my itinerary for the next few hours. He was very pleasant, considerate and helpful. He also showed me additional things which he thought that I might appreciate. One of them was Jean-Baptiste Debret's paintings of the life of the slaves in Viagem Pitoresca e Histórica ao Brasil, which was in the bookshop on the ground floor of Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil. He is an excellent tour guide with his wide knowledge in various fields.
