1 Day Nature tour itinerary for Hong Kong: Do The Geopark Hiking And Boating Tour
Come check out some of the best parts of this UNESCO Global Geopark: hike about 8 km over rough terrains at the East Dam, have lunch at a remote seaside restaurant at Sha Kiu and enjoy a scenic boat tour along Jin and Sharp islands.
The Hong Kong Global Geopark of China is a geologically unique area, exposing rock formations unlike anywhere else in the world.
High Island is one of the main areas where the famous hexagonal columns are exposed. These columns are unique, as they are made of tuff (compacted volcanic ash) and are on average 1.2 m in diameter. Similar columns are found in many other places in the world, but they typically consist of basalt (a lava rock) and have a much smaller diameter. These tuffs were formed in the caldera of a super-volcano and can be found in an area of about 100 sq. km diameter.
The hike starts off at the East Dam of High Island Reservoir, where columns were freshly exposed during excavation works for the construction of the reservoir. We can see the columns, and learn about rock forms such as a fault breccia, bends, and a dike intrusion.
Next is a sea cave, now not exposed to the waves as it is in between the main dam and the coffer dam. It is a bit of a scramble to get there, but the effort is totally worth it.
We then walk to Pak Lap and take a rough trail to visit Mok Min Cave, a sea arch which can be entered when the tide is low.
Finally, we hike back to Pak Lap and on to Sha Kiu, the end point of the hike. Here, we can have a nice seafood lunch at a seaside restaurant while we wait for a boat to pick us up and take us for a sea tour of the Geopark.
By boat, we will go to see the arch at Jin Island, after which we get off at Sharp Island to see the tombolo and pineapple bun rocks.
Finally by boat back to Sai Kung, the endpoint of this tour. From Sai Kung, you may take public transport or a taxi back to the city.
This tour includes a fairly demanding walk of about 8 km, taking about 4 hours to complete including ample time for sight-seeing.
