DAY 01

The Gantouw Pass

  • 07h00 We will travel from Somerset West east up the Sir Lowry's Pass and over the mountain to our starting point.

  • By 07h30 we will set out on our walk. The trail is a 5km return walk and takes about 3 - 4 hours to complete, depending on the stops and weather.

  • The 2.5 km walk up the slope of the mountain to the top of the old pass is an easy walk up and takes an hour along single as well as some vehicle tracks.

  • Once at the top of the kloof, the track starts to dip steeply down and it is here where the ruts that the wagon wheels carved into the rocks become visible. The Dutch and British settlers at the Cape built this rough pass called the Hottentots Holland Kloof Pass following the Gantouw route.

  • The first recorded crossing was in 1664, and by 1821 the pass was seeing 4500 ox-wagons per year crossing into the interior, but the route was so severe that more than 20% of them were damaged. The ruts left by these wagons being dragged over the mountains can still be seen and were declared a National Monument in 1958.

  • Also, while taking a bird's eye view from the top of the pass, are the 2 historic canons which were used to communicate over the mountains.

  • 450.00 ZAR Per Person (* 1 Person)
  • 950.00 ZAR Per Group (* 2 to 4 People)
  • 1500.00 ZAR Per Group (* 5 to 9 People)

The mountain crossing in that region was known by the indigenous Khoi people as the Gantouw or Eland's Pass and was used as a stock route. The Dutch and British settlers at the Cape built a rough pass called the Hottentots Holland Kloof Pass following the Gantouw route. The first recorded crossing was in 1664, and by 1821 the pass was seeing 4500 ox-wagons per year crossing into the interior, but the route was so severe that more than 20% of them were damaged. The ruts left by these wagons being dragged over the mountains can still be seen and were declared a National Monument in 1958.
