Mount Kenya-Kenya
Trek across the Chogoria route to reach the summit of Africa's second highest, and Kenya's highest mountain. Follow the most magnificent ascent and descent route at Mount Kenya with truly spectacular views and beautiful forest tracks.
DAY 01
Mount Kenya Climb Day 1: Nairobi – Nanyuki - Old Moses
07:30 am: After early morning pick up from chosen destination, proceed to Nanyuki Town.
On arrival, visit Nanyuki shopping mall Nakumatt for essentials and have a cup of Kenyan tea while the crew finalizes the purchase of food.
Arrive at Sirimon gate and have lunch while the team formalizes the entry process and fee payments as required by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Park Authority.
After the process, start walking from the gate to the camp. It normally takes 2-3 hours to get to Old Moses, which is about 3300m.
Dinner and overnight stay in the camp.
DAY 02
Mount Kenya Climb Day 2: Old Moses - Shipton Camp
06:30 am: Enjoy breakfast as well as hot coffee and tea.
After breakfast, prepare and re-arrange the bag while ascending the Sirimon Track to Likii North Valley.
See the beautiful little valley below the subsidiary peaks of Teleki and Sendeyo, two ancient parasitic vents of the main peaks. (3990m)
Climb out of the North Valley and into the Mackinders Valley, one of the broadest valleys on the mountain, with many giant groundsels and good views of the main peaks.
Brief stopover for picnic lunch along the valley on top of the cliff.
After lunch, trek for 3 hours to ascend to Shipton camp just bellow the main peak of Batian and Nelion. (7-8 hours)
On arrival, enjoy cup of hot coffee or tea.
After refreshments, climbers will have an option to take a short walk for acclimatizing and then descend to the camp.
Dinner and overnight stay in Shipton Camp (4200m). (The weather at this camp sometimes may go bellow 10 degrees depending on climate or seasonal change)
DAY 03
Mount Kenya Climb Day 3: Shipton Camp - Austrian Hut
07:30 am: Have breakfast.
09:00 am: Pack and start ascending uphill to Simba col which is about 4610m.
Proceed on a gradual trail along samba tarn to join the trail that connects to Mintos hut from Austrian hut.
Trek towards the Austrian camp.
Arrive in time for lunch, having done half circuit of the summit clockwise.The hike takes 3-4 hours.
Spend rest of the afternoon in the camp relaxing while waiting to hit the summit the following morning.
Dinner and overnight stay in Austrian hut.
DAY 04
Mt Kenya Climb Day 4: Austrian Hut – Lenana – Chogoria Bandas
04:30 am: Wake up call, followed by cup of coffee or tea biscuits.
Start the Alpine ascent to the highest peak Pt. Lenana (4985m) at 05:00 am.
Arrive at the summit in time to watch the sunrise.
This is the most challenging bit of the Mount Kenya trekking and will require a strong mind and will as well as the spirit of adventure to reach the summit.
On a clear day, one can spot the snow capped summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro in the South, Mt. Elgon to the west, and the Indian Ocean to the East.
After photography and viewing opportunity at the summit, surrounded by glaciers and ice rock caves, descend leisurely to Mintos hut for 2 hours.
Arrive in time to enjoy hot breakfast.
There after, descend further down for about 2-3 hours to road.
Head for picnic lunch. At this point, the body of climbers will be gaining strength.
In the next 2 hours, arrive in Chogoria Bandas and have hot African tea or coffee.
19:00 pm: Dinner.
Overnight stay at camp.
DAY 05
Mt Kenya Trek Day 5: Mt Kenya Bandas - Chogoria Gate - Nairobi
07:00 am: After breakfast, walk about 10 km down through the forest to meet driver for drive back down to Chogoria town.
Depart towards Nairobi and have hot lunch on the way.
Arrive at Nairobi in late afternoon, with a drop off to respective places of residence.
