28 Days Jungle Expedition tour itinerary for kenya: East Africa Adventure Tour

From Entebbe, we head out 23km into Lake Victoria to Ngamba Island to visit the Chimpanzee Sanctuary. There are over 40 rescued Chimps on the island and the Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Wildlife Conservation Trust are currently looking at the option of re-releasing the Chimps back into the wild.

We will observe the Chimps antics during feeding time; this can be quite a raucous affair! 

We camp in full view of the scenic Lake Bujagali; our campsite is surrounded by picturesque villages. There will be plenty of opportunities to interact with the friendly locals and learn a little about their way of life.

One of the highlights here is to spend a day volunteering or helping out with one of the many projects in the local community. We head off on foot into the village on a guided walk, gaining an insight into a traditional Ugandan rural way of life; usually many children accompany us hand in hand on this walk proud to show off their homesteads, at the end of our visit we are spoilt with a delicious Ugandan meal.

There will also be time for participating in the optional activities of white water rafting, quad biking or horse riding. 

We say goodbye to Uganda and cross the border into neighbouring Kenya heading for Eldoret. Situated in the western highlands; Eldoret receives one of the highest rainfalls in Kenya and has some of the richest farmland in Africa, many famous long-distance runners have trained in these ideal conditions and Eldoret was home to Olympic double gold medallist Kipchoge.

We stay at a picturesque campsite set beside the Naiberi River. As the evening gets cold we warm up around the log fire.

Nakuru is our next destination, a scenic campsite not far from the famous Lake Nakuru National Park. The park is dominated by a shallow soda lake which at certain times of the year is host to over a million pink flamingos feeding on the shore.

We enjoy a full day game drive in the park which has some remarkable wildlife including black rhino, white rhino, buffalo, zebra, giraffe, lion, leopard, waterbuck and more than 450 bird species. 

Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake whose shores are fringed with Papyrus and Yellow Barked Acacia trees; wallowing hippos frequent the shallows. Our campsite is on the edge of the lake and home to Black & White Colobus Monkeys and many species of birds including the African Fish Eagle.

A short distance from the lake is Hell's Gate National Park, one of the only parks you can walk and cycle around. With a guide you will have the chance to enjoy the dramatic landscape and scenery, experiencing the thrill of being amongst the wildlife, may be coming face to face with herds of grazing zebras, towering giraffes or some galloping gazelles.

We visit Elsamere for afternoon tea, former homestead of the late Joy Adamson, who reared Elsa the Lioness, probably one of the most famous animal stories ever told, immortalized in the book and film, 'Born Free'. 

From Naivasha, we head into the Masai Mara National Reserve for hopefully some of the best game viewing on earth and may be catch the annual wildebeest migration where millions of the ungainly beasts move north from the Serengeti seeking luscious grass. Huge pride of lions can be found everywhere and elephants, buffaloes, zebras and hippos also exist in large numbers.

There is a good chance of spotting the big five (lions, buffaloes, rhino, elephant and leopard). We will sit around the campfire in the evenings, under the clear starlit sky and listen to the calls of the wild. As we game drive in the reserve, we observe the vast range of animal and bird life.

A colorful sight around this area is the Masai herdsmen, grazing their stock dressed in their red shukas (blankets) and ornate beads. 

We leave the spectacular Masai Mara and make our way back to Nairobi, climbing from the floor of the Rift Valley up the escarpment, we will look out for fabulous views of the volcanic cones of mounts Longonot and Suswa as we go.

We visit the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage (as seen on BBC), giving us an insight into these amazingly social mammals, we then spend a leisurely afternoon at the Bomas of Kenya, learning a little about the rich culture of the many different Kenyan tribes and viewing some traditional homesteads, followed by a spectacular performance of customary dances and songs from the different ethnic groups.

We enjoy an evening together at the world famous Carnivore Restaurant. 

Heading south we cross the border into Tanzania and if we are lucky we may have some great views of Mt Kilimanjaro, Africa's tallest mountain (5,895m), the snow-capped plateau dominating the landscape for miles around. Look out on the way for the gerenuk antelope often seen browsing the acacia bushes on the roadside.

We head to the safari headquarters of Arusha and Meserani. 

From Arusha you will go for a 3 day/2 night safari into the world famous Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater.

Breathtaking Savannah, magnificent wildlife, colorful birdlife, sensational sunsets all make this one of the most unforgettable safari experiences on earth. 

Time in Arusha can be spent relaxing, exploring the craft shops, visiting the Masai museum or perhaps take a camel safari to explore the area.

Market day is a lively and vibrant affair at the local Masai cattle markets, a perfect way to really observe this remarkable culture. 

Heading south with a little good luck we have another chance to see the magnificent Mount Kilimanjaro. Our destination is the Usambara Mountains where we stay at Lushoto. Wander in the local village and be charmed by Africa, the smiles, the waves of children, the many colors of the traditional garments worn by the woman.

An afternoon walk with a local guide to Irente Viewpoint to look out over the vast Masai Steppe ends this special day. 

Feel the humidity change as we near the Tanzanian coast, palm trees, and giant baobabs replace the scrub as we reach the glittering Indian Ocean and head to our campsite on the beach. (B, L, D)

After flying from Dar Es Salaam we step onto the 'Spice Island' of Zanzibar. The name promises to take your senses to another world and has lured travelers to its shores for centuries. Many different cultures have made their home here and all have contributed and influenced Zanzibar. Hidden among the narrow winding streets of Zanzibar are countless bazaars, mosques and palaces. Marvel at the whitewashed, coral-rag houses, with over-hanging balconies and the richly detailed carved brass-studded doors.

We spend two nights in the historic Stone Town before we head up to the northern beaches. On the Spice Tour, your local guide will show you a variety of different spices and fruits grown on the island, as well as explain its fascinating history. It is easy to see the strong Arabic influence as you listen to the Muslim prayer chanting and see the traditional dress.

In the evening we can enjoy a 'sundowner' watching the sunset over the Indian Ocean before sampling the delights of the local restaurants or maybe a trip to the night food markets to savour the myriad of fresh seafood available.

While staying in local beach cottages on the northern beaches we organize a boat ride in a traditional Arabic sailing dhow visiting a neighbouring beach for dinner.

You can also go snorkeling or even dive in the beautiful waters of the Indian Ocean. Its coconut palms, white sand and clear blue sea, make it a peaceful tropical setting perfect for relaxing near the ending of the tour.

Our last night together is spent back in Stone Town where we'll have our last group meal together before flying back to Dar es Salaam the next day.
