1 Day Culture tour itinerary for Mombasa: Experience The Sights Of Kenya's Historic City
Take this popular day trip in the historic city of Mombasa, including a guided tour of Fort Jesus and the Old Town, a tuk-tuk ride to a local Swahili restaurant for lunch, and an afternoon at Haller Park, enjoying the wildlife. You can also explore the Akamba Carving Market.
You will be picked up from your accommodation at around 8.00 am.
Drive to the Likoni Ferry, at a distance of 40kms from Diani. You will cross over to Mombasa Island, arriving at around 9.30am.
The sights we will cover are:
Akamba Handicraft Industry Cooperative Society - This is one of the largest wood carving workshops and craft markets in Kenya, employing an incredible 10,000 local people. This non-profit organisation is where you can meet the carvers and if you wish you can buy their carvings at affordable prices.
Thereafter, you visit the Swaminarayan Hindu Temple to view the ornately painted doors and vivid paintings from Hindu mythology.
Along Moi Avenue: You will also have the chance to see the famous elephant tusks built in 1952 in honour of Princess Elizabeth's visit and to commemorate her coronation.
Visit Fort Jesus, one of the oldest European buildings in Africa, built by the Portuguese in 1593. It is a huge bastion with a key position overlooking the old port of Mombasa. Changing hands nine times over the centuries, it subsequently became a prison during the British Colonial period and thereafter, it was declared a national monument and made into a museum in 1962.
Get transported back in time as you explore the Old Town where you can walk along the narrow winding streets and visit the fish market, old Mombasa harbour and the Mandhry Mosque, considered to be the oldest mosque on the island.
You will then visit a local market where you will learn about spices, tropical fruits and vegetables.
Around 1 pm, proceed for lunch in Mombasa for some fabulous traditional Swahili/Arabic food.
After lunch, visit Bamburi Haller Park. This small game sanctuary is a rehabilitated quarry covered in casuarinas, bamboo and eucalyptus trees. It is home to buffalo, eland, giraffe, antelope, crocodile, hippo, giant tortoise, a snake park and many different species of birds.
At 4.00 pm, you will head back to your hotel or accommodation, arriving around 5.30 pm.
