Hike up the mountain
Mount Kenya-Kenya
Hike via forested regions, moorlands, Mackinder’s valley so as to enjoy panoramic views and mountainscapes from Lenana point and Mount Meru Bandas up on this mighty mountain, which is also Africa's second highest mountain.
DAY 01
Nairobi/sermon/judmier camp
Old Moses camp 3-3 hrs, 9 km,860 ascent.
Leave Nairobi at 8 am to go to Nanyuki town for lunch.
Drive will take about 4 hours. Proceed to the Sirimon gate (1 hr, 2440 m).
From the gate, follow the track as it winds uphill through the forest which becomes heathland after about 3 hours. About 3 and half hours, from the gate, turn right to reach the Judmier camp at 3,300 m altitude for dinner and overnight stay.
Climb up through forest areas into a wide ridge and approach to the summit area. The route starts on the northwest side of the Kenya mountain near Nanyuki. The access will be adequate and the stay house facilities are the best on this side of the mountain
DAY 02
Judmier camp /Shipton camp
6-7 hrs, 14 km, 900 m ascent.
After breakfast, follow the track uphill towards the Mt. Kenya summit with your Kenyan mountain guide. After one hour from Old Moses camp, the track crosses the Ontulili river.
Go right through the moorlands and crossings in the north and continue uphill till Mackinder’s valley from where there will be panoramic views from the valley towards that of the main mountain peaks in this region.
Dinner and overnight stay at Shipton’s camp (4200 m altitude).
DAY 03
Shipton’s camp- acclimatization day
Spend today acclimatizing with a walk to Kami Hut down to Houseberg lakes (Hauseberg Tarn and Nanyuki Tarn).
Walk back to Shipton's camp for dinner and overnight stay.
DAY 04
Shipton’s/point Lenana/mount meru bandas (chogoria gate)
6 hrs, 14 km, 785 m ascent.
Begin at 2 am and go up a steep stony quarry that cuts through a cliff clearing visible parts towards the Lower Hall Tarn.
Arrive at the Lenana point at about 6:30 am with your Kenyan mountain guide. So, this steep climb will take about 3 hours.
After the sunrise, descend down to Mintos Hut for about 2 hours.
Have breakfast here and it is a further few hours down to Mount Meru Bandas at 2,950 m altitude.
Dinner and overnight stay will be here.
DAY 05
chogoria bandas/chogoria/Nairobi
Descend for about 2 hours, 15 km from Meru Bandas.
Catch the transfer vehicle to Chogoria village from where you will connect with your transfer to Nairobi city.
