5 Days Bird Watching tour itinerary for Nairobi & Mount Kenya: Climb Kenya's Highest Peak
Embark on a climbing expedition to the highest mountain in Kenya and the second-highest peak in Africa. It is located in the centre of Kenya, almost on the equator and about 90 miles northeast of the capital. It was traditionally regarded as a holy mountain and the dwelling-place of God by the Kikuyu and Embu communities living adjacent to it.
Climbing Mount Kenya
Climbing Mount Kenya through varied ecosystems and awe-inspiring scenery.
Visit volcanic ridges and glacial valleys radiating across the land like spokes from a wheel, the massive bulk of Mount Kenya straddles the Equator yet is permanently crowned with snow.
Batian (5,199 m) and Nelion (5,188 m)
Explore 588 square-kilometre National Park, surrounded by 2000 square kilometres of Forest Reserve, which is dominated by the twin summits of Batian (5,199 m) and Nelion (5,188 m) whose jagged snow-capped peaks are all that remains of a gigantic volcanic lava plug that once thrust another 300 meters into the sky.
Mount Kenya Forest Reserve
2000-square-kilometre Mount Kenya Forest Reserve, which is the largest forest reserve and water-catchment area in Kenya and features magnificent stands of buttressed and lichen-draped juniper, podocarpus and African olive trees whose dense canopy provides the ideal habitat for vast herds of buffalo and elephant as well as a bright kaleidoscope of birds and other wildlife.
Observe forest birds like Green Ibis (local Mount Kenya race), Ayer's Hawk-Eagle, Abyssinian Long-eared Owl, Scaly Francolin, Ruppel's Robin-chat and numerous sunbirds (Nectariniidae) including the Scarlet-tufted Malachite Sunbird.
