7 Days Nature tour itinerary for Mount Kilimanjaro, Machame & Moshi: Take The Whisky Route Up To Kili

Climb the highest free-standing mountain in the whole world and the highest mountain on Africa's continent. Machame Route is popularly known as “Whisky Route”, though no whiskey available. The route is indeed is a less difficult climb and it does have much higher success rates. On the 3rd Day, it allows ample acclimatization as one climbs high and sleep low.

DAY 01

Moshi - Machame Gate - machame camp.

  • Drive from Moshi town to Machame Gate, which takes about 50 minutes passing the Machame village, located in the lower slopes of the mountain. 

  • Meet the rest of your team [porters], check-in the park gate and start trekking through the tropical rain forest to reach Machame Camp in 5 -7 hours. Lunch would be packed for you. 

Dinner and Overnight at the Camp. 

Hiking distance: 11 km.

DAY 02

Machame camp - Shira camp

  • After having breakfast, leave the glades of the rain forest, crossing a little valley walking along a steep rocky ridge. The route then turns to the west reaching  Shira Camp in 4 - 6 hours. Lunch will be provided in a halfway.

Dinner and overnight at the camp. 

Hiking distance: 5 km

DAY 03

Shira camp - lava tower - Baranco camp

  • From the Shira plateau, continue to the east up a ridge passing the junction towards the peak of Kibo with your Kilimanjaro trekking guide.

  • Continue trekking towards South-East via Lava Tower.

  • Have lunch from this point and continue down to Barranco Camp.

Dinner and Overnight at the Camp. 

Hiking Distance; 10 km in 6-8 hours

DAY 04

Baranco - Karanga camp.

  • After breakfast, leave the camp and climb a non-technical but steep ridge Barranco Wall.

  • Continue trekking in a series of hills reaching Karanga Camp.

Dinner and overnight at the Camp. 

Hiking Distance: 5 km in 4-5 hours.

DAY 05

Karanga camp - Barafu camp

  • Right after breakfast and gearing up, start trekking, passing the junction to Mweka trail continuing up to the Barafu Camp.

  • From this camp, Mawenzi peak and the Kibo peak are very visible.

  • Have an early dinner and resting ahead of the summit the next day.

Hiking Distance: 4 km in 4 -5 hours.

DAY 06

Barafu camp - Uhuru peak - mweka camp

  • Wake up at around 2300 hours, and have a simple breakfast.

  • Gear up and start the journey to the summit in the dark. This is the most challenging part on your bodies both mentally and physically.

  • Walk at a pace of your own step after the other not competing with other hikers or teammates. It is said “ Pole Pole” meaning slow but sure.

  • At Stella point [18,600ft], you will be rewarded by the epic sunrise if the weather is clear.

  • Then, continue in about an hour along the crater rim to the summit.

  • At this point, Uhuru Peak, you are now on the highest point of Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa. 

  • Spend a short time at the summit taking photos and start descending down to Barafu Camp for lunch and a rest.

  • Afterwards, continue trekking down to Mweka Camp.

  • Enjoy the last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep.

Hiking Ascent Distance: 5 km in 6-7 hours.

Hiking Descent Distance from the summit to Mweka: 23 km 6 hours.

DAY 07

Mweka camp - Moshi town

  • After the breakfast and a little celebration, pick up your day packs and start descending.

  • On arriving at the gate, you’ll be rewarded with certificates of achievement.

  • Board a vehicle which will drive you back in your hotel in Moshi or onward destination.

  • 2150 USD Per Adult (* Prices based on per person 2 sharing)
  • Transport from Kilimanjaro Airport and back.

  • Transport from Moshi hotel to park gate and back.

  • 2 nights accommodation in a standard hotel in Moshi based on bed and breakfast.

  • Paying for entrance and camping fees and Government taxes.

  • Vehicle rescue fees.

  • Paying of porters, cooks and guiding services.

  • 3 meals a day whilst on the mountain.

  • All camping tents, sleeping mats and equipment.

  • International flights.

  • Travel and health insurance.

  • The hiring of mountain hiking gears eg sleeping bags, hiking boots, etc.

  • Personal snacks.

  • Tips or anything else not listed above.

  • This route is popularly known as “Whisky Route”. Machame Route is indeed less difficult climb and it does have much higher success rates.
