Machame Route
Mount Kilimanjaro-Tanzania
Feast your eyes on the breathtaking views of Pare Mountains, Lakes Chala and Jipe, and Mt Meru as you make your way up to Mount Kilimanjaro's Uhuru Peak via the Machame Route. Enjoy camping along the trail at various trekking campsites and pass through various landscapes from forests to ice fields.
DAY 01
Machame Gate to Machame Camp Site
You will be driven from the hotel, after breakfast, for the start of your Mt Kilimanjaro climb.
It will be a 13 km hike through montane forest – starting from an elevation of 1200 m at the Machame Gate and ending at 3000 m at the Machame campsite for dinner and an overnight stay.
DAY 02
Machame Hut Campsite to Shira Campsite
The hike up Mt Kilimanjaro will kick off immediately after breakfast.
Ascending from an elevation of 3000m to 3800m, you will leave the montane forest behind to cross small valleys and rocky ridges - to arrive on the western side of the mountain for the night stop-over and dinner at the Shira Campsite.
From the campsite, you will get amazing views of the Shira plateau, Mt Meru, and the Kibo peak.
DAY 03
From the Shira Campsite to Barranco Campsite
After an early breakfast, you will embark on the day’s 13 km trek.
You will go from 3800m to 3950m – going east to acclimatize – and reach the junction leading to the lava tower rock at 4600m.
Then, back down to the Barranco Campsite for dinner and overnight camping.
DAY 04
Barranco Campsite to Karanga Campsite
On this day, you will go a distance of 6km to climb the Barranco wall and go up to 4200m for acclimatization.
Traversing ridges and valleys, you will get down to the Karanga Campsite in good time for a hot lunch.
You will have some time to rest before another acclimatization hike towards the southern ice field.
Dinner and overnight will be at the Karanga Campsite.
DAY 05
Karanga Campsite to Barafu Campsite
You will go on a short but an altitude-challenging distance on this Mt Kilimanjaro hiking journey. It will be a slow walk to avoid getting burnt-out on the steep climb.
Going from an elevation of 3900m to 4620m, you will cut across the alpine desert.
Dinner will be served earlier than usual in order to get some rest before setting out again at midnight.
DAY 06
From Barafu Campsite to Uhuru Peak and down to the Mweka Campsite
You will be served a light breakfast before departing for the Uhuru peak, shortly after midnight.
On this last leg, you will have wonderful views of the crater rim by 4 – 5 am.
You will make it to your journey’s goal at dawn, having gone through desert and ice habitat to meet with the sunrise at the Uhuru Peak.
After summit celebration and a photo session, the descent will begin, back to the Barafu camp where lunch will be served.
After some rest, the descent will continue to the Mweka campsite for dinner and the final mountain night, having moved from 4620m to 5895m and down to 3100m.
DAY 07
Mweka Campsite to Mweka Gate
After breakfast, you will go through the montane forest on a 3100m to 1700m decline back to civilisation.
At the gate, you will sign out and then board your transport back to the hotel to receive your much deserved Mt Kilimanjaro summit certificate.
